Inhalt: In European public debates, Islam is often described as an impediment to gender equality. By using data from surveys conducted in Germany, we analyze the role of high levels of individual religiosity in explaining Turks' and Germans' approval of gender equality and the way Turkish and German couples share household tasks. Results suggest that for both groups, individuals with strong religious commitments are less likely than secular ones to hold egalitarian gender role attitudes. At the behavioral level, this correlation between religiosity and gender egalitarianism only holds true for Turkish respondents. Furthermore, strong religious commitments contribute to generational stability in attitudinal and behavioral gender-traditionalism among Turks. However, when explaining Germans' more egalitarian gender-related attitudes and behaviors, religiosity turns out to be just one factor among others – and not a particularly important one. Further research is needed to disentangle the different cultural and religious aspects of Muslim migrants’ attitudes and behaviors.
Religious socialisation and fertility: transition to third birth in the Netherlands

Inhalt: Although previous studies have demonstrated that religious people in Europe have larger families, the role played by religious socialisation in the context of contemporary fertility behaviour has not yet been analysed in detail. This contribution specifically looks at the interrelation between religious socialisation and current religiosity and their impact on the transition to the third child for Dutch women. It is based on data of the first wave of the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (2002–2004) and uses event history analysis. The transitions to first, second and third birth are modelled jointly with a control for unobserved heterogeneity. The findings provide evidence for an impact of women’s current church attendance as well as religious socialisation measured by their fathers’ religious affiliation, when they were teenagers. A religious family background remains influential even when a woman has stopped attending church. The effects of religious indicators strengthen over cohorts. Moreover, the combined religious make-up of the respondent’s parents also significantly determines the progression to the third child.

Inhalt: European societies have experienced a decrease in the social importance of religious issues. Values and attitudes towards gender roles have also changed in the last decades. In European countries, people have become more egalitarian with respect to the position of women in society. The author tries to identify the relationship between secularization and changes in gender values. As a result of secularization, the individual value system has become fragmented and religious values have lost their coordinating role. The investigation employs cross-national and longitudinal analysis of European Values Survey data (1990, 1999), most of the European countries being included in the study. The results indicate the decreasing impact of traditional religious belief on values related to gender roles during the 1990s in Europe and a common pattern of relationships between gender values and religiosity in most European societies.
Titelübersetzung:Feminisms in the postcolonial republic: debates on the law banning the veil in France
Autor/in:
Bauhardt, Christine
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The French debate on the law banning the Muslim veil in public space shows that, feminist activists refer to the principles of republican universalism despite their controversial political attitudes. Republician laicism offers the challenge of being understood as a really neutral space, where religions can express themselves as voices of civil society, and where nonetheless the right to not be religious is also recognized." Integration im Spannungsfeld kultureller Differenzen: Islam und Geschlecht in der Marktgemeinde Telfs in Tirol

Hollomey, Christina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The aim of this paper is to show an example of a local integration project in the Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. How does a multicultural discourse contribute to the exclusion of women in the process of negotiating integration? Local municipalities, in trying to find new ways of ´living together liaise with migrant associations in order to get into contact with the local immigrant population. However, both actors often employ an essentialistview of culture that tends to naturalizehegemonic constructions of identity and finally leads to the reproduction of asymmetric structures of participation. Thus, integration projects may fail to address basic structural inequalities between social majorities and minorities. The focus of this paper is on women engaged in two Turkish Islamic associations in the Austrian Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. Discussing the example of a locally implemented integration project, it analyses how a multicultural discourse can serve to legitimate asymmetric participation structures within associations, as well as to reproduce them in the cooperation between migrant organizations and local municipalities.' Appropriating the mosque: women's religious groups in Khartoum
Titelübersetzung:Die Aneignung der Moschee: religiöse Frauengruppen in Khartoum
Autor/in:
Nageeb, Salma A.
Quelle: Afrika Spectrum, 42 (2007) 1, S 5-27
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This paper discusses the case of women's mosques groups in the capital of Sudan which have considerably spread since the National Islamic Front (NIF) seized power in 1989. The paper empirically demonstrates how the mosque groups are forming a social space for women and how this is leading to the appropriation and transformation of a public-religious and a highly masculine space such as the mosque. The main argument of the paper maintains that the case of the mosque groups contests the undifferentiated view that women in Islamic and specially Islamised societies are (necessarily) oppressed and that the only way to question the unequal gender relation and power structure is by getting away from religion. The paper asserts that, on the contrary, women active in mosque groups are claiming (more) power by becoming (more) religious. Through this power they constitute a space, transform public and religious ones and negotiate their gendered position vis-à-vis social and religious authorities and institutions.' Inhalt: 'This article discusses different aspects of gender roles in the 'Nation of Islam', a religion of 'African American Islam', founded in 1930. The 'Nation of Islam' believes that the 'Black Race' represents the chosen people of Allah and that 'African Americans' should develop their dignity, strength and autonomy through separation from the 'Whites'. In this context the importance of gender roles in reference to racism, sexism and nationalism is being displayed. The 'Nation of Islam' assigns a passive role to women - proposing a 'natural destiny'. However, women demand a multiple positioning due to their social and political relevance for organisations and public space, which is at conflict with such an external, comprehensive life concept claim.' Polish Women in the Mid-1990s: Christian Democrats in a Country without a Christian Democratic Party
Autor/in:
Saxonberg, Steven
Quelle: Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review, 8 (2000) 2, S 233-253
Inhalt: This article discusses Polish attitudes toward gender in the early- to mid-1990s. It shows that during this period, Poles on the average had 'Christian democratic values,' although there were no Christian democratic parties in parliament during this period. The majority of Poles supported some type of 'social market economy,' while maintaining traditional views toward gender roles & moral issues. Polish women on the average, though, were clearly more in favor of gender equality than their male counterparts. Age & years of education were also important factors in determining attitudes toward gender roles, while the Church was not as influential as expected. Further, the gender gap was largest among those with a middle level education & smallest among those with a low level of education.
