Inhalt: Above all the project "childlessness and large families" aims to investigate significant factors to explain the (not occurring) transition to the first and the third child. This question is supposed to be answered predominantly by analyzing quantitative data, especially using surveys and panels. Therefore this paper presents a range of social sciences data-sources and investigates whether these sources are relevant for the project. We focus on nine data-sources that are in our opinion principally usable for the research questions of our project. The following datasets are described briefly: Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics (PAIRFAM), Job Mobilities and Family lives in Europe (JobMob), Working and Learning in a Changing World (ALWA), National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), Familien in Deutschland (Familys in Germany) (FiD), Generations and Gender Survey (GGS), Eurobarometer (2006 und 2011), Aufwachsen in Deutschland: Alltagswelten (Growing up in Germany: Everydays Life World) (AID:A). For each data-source the percentages of childless respondents with large families are described. These are reflected also in the context of the number of available cases. The main result of the investigation is that all described datasets can be used for the one or the other aspect of analysing childlessness or large families. But there is no secondary source which meets all criteria that are principally desirable.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Matched employer-employee (panel) data sets are gaining increasing importance in the analysis of labour markets. In collaboration with Statistics Austria we recently initiated the set up of a matched employer-employee panel data set for Austria, which covers the years 2002-2005. The aim of the paper is to introduce the data set to a broader audience. We first present the set up of the panel data, indicating in more detail the data sources and matching procedure underlying the matched employer-employee data set for Austria. In a second step we show descriptive statistics of the main variables included in our data set. These various statistics encompass three levels of analysis: the aggregate level (i.e. the entire sample), firm level and individual (employee) level." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: Existing evidence on the relationship between ethnic heterogeneity, social capital (trust, voluntarism, associational membership etc.), and levels of public goods provision is inconclusive, especially for the European context. The project Ethnic Diversity, Social Trust, and Civic Engagement, financed by the German Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, was intended to advance our knowledge of this relationship by conducting a comparative analysis across three countries, across regions and cities, as well as in the local organisational context of school communities, and using three complementary methodological approaches. First, the Ethnic Diversity and Collective Action Survey (EDCAS) across local populations in 74 selected regions in Germany, France, and the Netherlands with a total sample size of 10 200 allowed comparisons of cities with different levels of ethnic diversity and different policy approaches to deal with immigration. Second, case studies on parental participation in schools in Berlin and Lyon provided qualitative insight into the processes behind ethnic diversity effects. Finally, survey, online and field experiments with local residents were conducted to investigate the causal mechanisms behind these effects. Results presented in the paper refer only to the German data. (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "Refusals are a significant source of non-response in surveys. During field periods of some surveys reasons for refusals are collected in call record data (as part of para-data). This article presents a study employing a content analysis of open-ended comments on reasons for refusals collected by interviewers in a survey of the German population (ALLBUS). We analysed the reasons for refusals contained in these comments, as well as to what extent these comments include information about factors relevant to participation in surveys. Additionally, we analysed the impact of interviewer characteristics – gender, age, education and experience – on data collection using various multilevel multinomial models. The results show that interviewer comments provide typical reasons for refusals, as well as specific information about target persons, their environment and the survey process. Interviewers' age and education influenced the collection of reasons for refusals. At the same time interviewer variances (obtained through multinomial multilevel models) were very high, showing that interviewers prefer to report certain reasons for refusals. The highest interviewer level variances were obtained for providing no comments at all. To improve data quality and reduce high interviewer impact, we suggest using
improved standardised instruments to collect reasons for refusals. Codings based on a categorisation scheme which we developed for our content analysis show high reliability (kappa = .81). Thus, this scheme can be used as a basis for developing such standardised instruments." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "Earnings nonresponse in the Current Population Survey is roughly 30% in the monthly surveys and 20% in the annual March survey. Even if nonresponse is random, severe bias attaches to wage equation coefficient estimates on attributes not matched in the earnings imputation hot deck. If nonresponse is ignorable, unbiased estimates can be achieved by omitting imputed earners, yet little is known about whether or not CPS nonresponse is ignorable. Using sample frame measures to identify selection, we find clear-cut evidence among men but limited evidence among women for negative selection into response. Wage equation slope coefficients are affected little by
selection but because of intercept shifts, wages for men and to a lesser extent women are understated, as are gender wage gaps. Selection is less severe among household heads/co-heads than among other household members." [author's abstract]

Inhalt: "Intergenerational relationships within family and kinship have become a salient issue in scientific research. Major reasons were intense demographic changes in the 20th century, such as the increased life expectancy in combination with decreased fertility, and its implications for major institutions of the social welfare state. This has resulted in the realization of several larger studies, which may serve for the analysis of the situation of old aged people, such as the German Socio-economic Panel, the Generations and Gender Survey, the Family Survey, the German Aging Survey, the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, and the Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics. However, an overarching theoretical and research perspective on intergenerational relationships from their creation (fertility) over parenting to the most long-lasting relationship between adults of different generations is still missing. In order to overcome this deficiency, the paper recommends for future data structures to obtain information on intergenerational relationships (1) simultaneously and complete, (2) in a lifespan perspective, (3) from a panel design, and (4) a multi-actor design. Studies should (5) account for cultural variability of intergenerational relationships and (6) for institutional settings in cross-national comparisons." (author's abstract)
