Structuring Photovoice for Community Impact: A Protocol for Research With Women With Physical Disability

Inhalt: Women with disability face participation barriers based on long-held misconceptions around their identity that adversely affect their health, income levels, and access to education and employment. It has been noted that photographs produced through photovoice methodology can help dismantle attitudinal and environmental barriers that people with disability continue to confront, but this method is rarely assessed for impact. In this protocol paper, we merge principles of feminist theory, photovoice methodology and integrated knowledge translation to generate 1. exhibition-quality participant-created photography on identity, 2. discussion around and insight into inclusion for women with disability and 3. a public exhibition to understand any impact these photographs may have on audiences and discriminatory barriers. Photographs, text, discussions and audience feedback are to be interrogated through thematic and narrative analysis. By aiming our arts-based research findings for a public audience, we hope to advance understanding of female identity and inclusion.
Using fiction to reveal truth: challenges of using vignettes to understand participant experiences within qualitative research

Inhalt: Vignettes are increasingly used within qualitative studies to research difficult topics, requiring ethical mindfulness and sensitivity from researchers. In this article, I examine the methodological issues of incorporating vignettes within qualitative research, specifically my research exploring South Asian maternal experiences of supporting their children with special education needs and disability (SEND). I present participants with seven vignettes concerning the roles of religion, culture, gender and immigrant history. By presenting the participants' responses, I explore the applicability of two ensuing methodological concerns: 1. Are authentic representations useful and straightforward measure of vignette's effectiveness? 2. Do reduced socially desired responses reflect the effectiveness of a vignette? I consider these questions in detail, as well as how addressing the first issue affected my commitment to the second issue. I conclude that vignettes can be a rich point of reference from which participants can exercise agency and actively construct their own understanding of the issues presented in the vignettes.

Inhalt: Neuere Studien zu Prozessen der Wissenskonstruktion in der qualitativen
Forschung zeigen, dass sich Leitorientierungen in der Praxis empirischer Sozialforschung in Europa und Nord-Amerika unterscheiden. Demzufolge sind nordamerikanische Orientierungen von einer spezifischen Lesart des Pragmatismus geprägt, bei der die Nähe zwischen Forschung und gesellschaftspolitischer Intervention betont wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund analysiere ich aktuelle US-amerikanische Debatten zum Generationenwechsel im Feld der Grounded-Theory-Methodologie (GTM) als Kontroverse um die "feministische Gretchenfrage", die besonders prononciert im Entwurf der Situationsanalyse von Adele CLARKE zum Ausdruck kommt. Ich zeige Implikationen für situationsanalytische Vorgehensweisen auf, beleuchte deren Verhältnis zur GTM und identifiziere abschließend synchrone und diachrone Geflechte, in denen sich die Situationsanalyse weiter methodologisch verorten lässt.

Developing Researcherhood: Identity Tensions and Identity Work of Women Academics Reflecting on their Researcher Identity

Inhalt: In this article, I explore the researcher identity of senior women academics in a South African institution of higher education. The aim was to uncover the identity tensions they experience in relation to being a researcher and to understand how they respond to and resolve these tensions. Three focus groups, based on the socioanalytic method of social dream drawing, provided the data. Data were analyzed through hermeneutic phenomenological reflection. Identity theory was applied as a conceptual framework to guide my interpretation of the data. Through their collective reflection on being researchers, the women became cognizant of identity tensions and their engagement with these reflected intrapersonal processing akin to identity work. In the findings, I highlight purposeful, collective identity work as a resource that enabled these women to re-construct self-defeating gendered conflicts in their researcherhood. By uncovering their identity tensions and related emotions, a sense of researcher self-efficacy emerged. They consequently reframed research success as meaningful self-expression and knowledge dissemination. I propose that collective identity work is a valuable endeavor for women researchers because it facilitates role identity development and a collective voice in responding to the demanding and constantly changing academic work context.

Inhalt: Within the framework of ethnography, field access plays an essential role for the progress and success of research projects using such a methodology. Based on a gender studies project in which we analyzed the change of gender arrangements (LENZ & ADLER, 2010) within a German university, we illustrate how field access not only poses a methodological challenge but also serves as an important source of information. Contrasting two faculties we show how the issue of gender is addressed in different organizational units. The two faculties have in common that they understand the gendering of the faculty culture as a question of numbers. At the same time the topic is externalized and thereby not taken as a relevant organizational task. Finally, we link the empirical results to the theoretical discussion about the "gendered organization" (ACKER, 1990; MÜLLER, RIEGRAF & WILZ, 2013) and deduce methodological challenges for gender studies.

Inhalt: In diesem Beitrag zeigen wir die Nutzung von Narrationsanalysen für teilstrukturierte Interviews, die wir mit insgesamt sechs Frauen geführt haben, die in Großstädten im Süden der USA leben und sich für eine "natürliche" Geburt ihres ersten Kindes entschieden hatten. Mittels der Creative Analytic Practice präsentieren wir die Erfahrungen der Frauen in Gedichtform, um die Spannung nachvollziehbar zu machen zwischen den Wünschen der Frauen einerseits und ihren tatsächlichen Schwangerschafts- und Geburtserfahrungen andererseits. Das Gedicht verdeutlicht Behördenpolitiken, Wege, wie Konsens in einigen amerikanischen Gesundheitsinstitutionen umgelenkt oder konstruiert wird und auch die Resilienz der befragten Frauen.
Inhalt: In this article, we explore narrative inquiry data we collected with women who attempted to have a natural, drug-free childbirth for the birth of their first child. The data presented come from semi-structured life story interviews with six women who live in a metropolitan city in the mid-southern United States. Using creative analytic practice (CAP), the women's experiences are presented as a composite poem. The (re)presentation of the women's narratives in the poem emphasizes the tensions between what women desired and planned for in contrast to what they actually experienced during pregnancy and birth. The poem illustrates the politics of agency, the ways in which consent is bypassed or assumed in some medical institutions in the United States, and the resilience of the women.

Inhalt: Die interdisziplinäre Tagung "Gender Studies meets Diskursforschung meets Gender Studies" widmete sich der wechselseitigen Beziehung von Gender- und Diskursforschung. In dem vorliegenden Tagungsessay wollen wir einen Einblick in die Debatten auf der Tagung geben und diese bezogen auf drei methodologische Schwerpunktsetzungen rekonstruieren und weiterführen: 1. theoretische Perspektiven auf das Verhältnis von Diskurs-Macht-Subjekt im Zusammenhang mit Geschlecht und Sexualität; 2. diskursanalytische Perspektiven auf Geschlecht und Sexualität in Textkorpora und 3. empirische Arbeiten am Schnittpunkt von Diskurs- und Geschlechterforschung - Analyse von Interviews, Dokumenten (und Gruppendiskussionen) sowie YouTube Videos. Bei der retrospektiven Betrachtung und Weiterführung der Tagungsbeiträge legen wir ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Frage, wie Diskurs und Geschlecht jeweils konzeptualisiert und ins Verhältnis gesetzt wurden und welche (Probleme oder welcher Mehrwert der) Gegenstandskonstitution damit verknüpft war(en). Abschließend betrachten wir die Ergebnisse der Tagung und versuchen einen Ausblick. Übergreifendes Ziel unseres Beitrags ist es, Möglichkeiten einer konsequenten Verknüpfung von Diskurs- und Geschlechterforschung aufzuzeigen.
Inhalt: The interdisciplinary conference "Gender Studies Meets Discourse Studies Meets Gender Studies: Entanglements, Affinities, Tensions, and Open Questions" focused on the relationship between gender studies and discourse studies. On the one hand this essay provides insights into the conference debates, and on the other it critically discusses the contributions. The following three key aspects provide guidelines for reconstructing and developing the arguments: 1. theoretical perspectives on the relation of discourse/power/subject to gender and sexuality; 2. discourse analysis focusing on gender and sexuality in written (media) texts; and 3. empirical research informed by discourse studies and gender studies - analysis of interviews, documents, focus groups, and YouTube videos. Retrospectively discussing and elaborating the conference contributions, we will particularly pay attention to the question of how discourse and gender were conceptualized and interrelated. Subsequently, we critically reflect upon objects of investigation and their implied approaches. Finally, we consider the outcomes of the conference and future prospects. Overall, the essay aims at outlining the potential of a consistent combination of gender studies and discourse studies.
Telling Stories in Pictures: Constituting Processual and Relational Narratives in Research With Young British Muslim Women in East London

Inhalt: In diesem Beitrag beschäftige ich mich mit der Möglichkeit, eine narrative Methodologie zu nutzen, um Zugang zur Konstruktion und Erzählung der Lebensgeschichten und positionalen Aushandlungsprozesse junger Ost-Londonerinnen als Mitglieder von Immigrant/innengemeinden zu gewinnen. Rückgreifend auf ein Projekt mit jungen britischen Musliminnen an der Keen Students' School in Ost-London diskutiere ich einen multimodalen methodologischen Ansatz, der aus den relationalen, imaginativen und räumlichen Kontexten der Studie heraus entwickelt wurde. Ich beschreibe auch, wie die Zone dieser multimodalen narrativen Methodologie das Verstehen der mobilen, multiplen und mitunter widersprüchlichen Positionierungen der jungen Frauen erlaubt hat.
Inhalt: In this article, I explore the possibility that a narrative research methodology, which focuses on the processes that bring together multiple narrative modalities, could be used to gain insight into the ways in which young residents of East London construct and tell stories about their lives and negotiate their positioning as members of immigrant communities. Drawing on research undertaken with a group of young British Muslim women at the Keen Students' School in East London, I discuss the multimodal methodological approach arising within the relational, imaginative and spatial contexts of the research. I also describe how the zone of this multimodal narrative methodology facilitates an understanding of the positioning of storytellers as mobile, multiple and sometimes contradictory.
Enclothed knowledge: the fashion show as a method of dissemination in arts-informed research

Inhalt: In diesem Beitrag befasse ich mich mit dem Prozess, dem Nutzen und den Problemen, denen ich bei dem Versuch begegnet bin, eine Modenschau als Mittel zur Verbreitung der Ergebnisse aus qualitativer Forschung zu konzipieren und zu realisieren. Modenschauen erleichtern den Zugang zu einer spezifischen Datenart, die ich als "Kleiderwissen" bezeichne, und der für statische oder verbale Beschreibungen nicht bestünde. Sie sind zugleich ein Raum, in dem Wissen der Teilnehmenden zirkuliert und in dem Forschende mit unterschiedlichen Adressat/innen in Berührung kommen können. Sie müssen sich aber auch ethischer Dilemmata gewahr sein, die u.a. daraus resultieren, dass Anonymität infolge des öffentlichen Charakters von Modenschauen nicht sichergestellt werden kann und besonderer Aufmerksamkeit bedarf. Ich versuche schließlich zu zeigen, dass Modenschauen einen Beitrag zu sozialer Gerechtigkeit leisten können, da sie erlauben, enge und stereotype Verständnisse marginaler Identitäten zu transformieren.
Inhalt: In this article, I investigate the processes, benefits and dilemmas of producing a fashion show as a method of dissemination in arts-informed qualitative research. I examine a project that used a fashion show to analyze and represent interview findings about men's understandings and performances of masculinities. Fashion shows facilitate the dissemination of new qualitative data -what I coin "enclothed knowledge"- which is embodied and inaccessible through static or verbal descriptions. Fashion shows also enable participants to shape knowledge circulation and allow researchers to engage diverse audiences. Despite these benefits, researchers have to be mindful of ethical dilemmas that occur from the absence of anonymity inherent in public performances and therefore I suggest strategies to mitigate these threats to research ethics. Ultimately, I argue that fashion shows advance social justice because the platform can transform narrow, stereotypical understandings of marginalized identities.
Embodying critical and corporeal methodology: digital storytelling with young women in eating disorder recovery

Inhalt: Bei digitalen Erzählungen handelt es sich um eine kunstbasierte Forschungsmethode, die Forschenden erlaubt, eng mit den Untersuchungsteilnehmer/innen zu arbeiten, dominanten Diskursen zu widersprechen und die (Wieder-) Entfaltung körperlicher Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zu fördern. In diesem Beitrag beschreiben wir, wie wir ein forschungsbasiertes Curriculum digitaler Erzählungen zur Untersuchung des Gesundungsprozesses nach einer Essstörung mittels Interviews mit jungen Frauen sowie unter Hinzuziehung von Forschungs- und belletristischer Literatur entwickelt haben. Wir zeigen, in welcher Weise dieses Curriculum als Gerüst genutzt werden konnte für den Ausdruck gelebter Gesundungserfahrungen. Die Erzählungen der Teilnehmerinnen verdeutlichen, was in diesem gemeinsamen Prozess besonders wesentlich war: Alle Erzählungen haben einen offenen Narrationsbogen, sie bekräftigen die (Inter-) Körperlichkeit der Gesundung und unterstreichen ein Konzept von Gesundung als Prozess. Nuancierungen in den individuellen Erzählungen verweisen auf die Einzigartigkeit körperlichen Erlebens im Gesundungsverlauf. Indem wir Essstörungen als Beispiel nehmen, wollen wir für die Potenziale digitaler Erzählung als kritische kunstbasierte Forschungsmethode sensibilisieren und zeigen, welcher Erkenntnisgewinn für uns daraus erwachsen ist, dass wir traditionelle Vorstellungen der Forscher/in-Untersuchungsteilnehmer/in-Beziehung verlassen und Kunst zum Stören dominanter Diskurse genutzt haben. Inhalt: Digital storytelling is as an arts-based research method that offers researchers an opportunity to engage deeply with participants, speak back to dominant discourses, and re-imagine bodily possibilities. In this article, we describe the process of developing a research-based digital storytelling curriculum exploring eating disorder recovery. We have built this curriculum around research interviews with young women in recovery as well as research and popular literature on eating disorder recovery. Here, we highlight how the curriculum acted as a scaffolding device for the participants' artistic creation around their lived experiences of recovery. The participants' stories crystallize what resonated for them in the workshop process: they each have an open-ended narrative arc, emphasize the intercorporeality of recovery, and focus on recovery as process. The nuances within each story reveal unique embodied experiences that contextualize their recoveries. Using the example of eating disorder recovery, we offer an illustration of the possibilities of digital storytelling as a critical arts-based research method and what we gain from doing research differently in terms of participant-researcher relationships and the value of the arts in disrupting dominant discourses.
