Titelübersetzung:How are students with immigrant backgrounds defined or characterized and do they have more problems when studying? : results from a student survey at the University of Duisburg-Essen

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "With about 25% the University of Duisburg-Essen has a significantly higher (maybe even the highest) percentage of students with immigrant backgrounds than the nationwide average. Thus it is no wonder that the university is intensively dealing with this. At the instigation of the there existing prorectorate for diversity management, a large student survey was conducted. First, narrowing down the object was due. This is addressed in the first part of the study presented here by the authoress. Reviewing various studies already reveals an amazing range on what is meant by 'immigrant background' and how 'educational background' is defined. The subsequent analysis on whether this group shows more or specific study problems comes to an initially surprising, but then very plausible result." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In their contribution the authors examine specific local conditions and thereby provide a reliable basis of information in order to be able to examine whether extra support services are needed and what these have to look like. However, they come to similar conclusions as the graduate sociologist Ursula M. Müller of the University of Duisburg-Essen." (author's abstract)
Männlich dominierte Computerwelt : Wege von Frauen in die Informatik
Titelübersetzung:Male dominated computer world : paths for women to computer science
Autor/in:
Ripke, Marita

Inhalt: "The lack of new students in the MINT subjects - particularly the lack of women - is a reason for numerous root cause analyzes. The author reviews this field from the opposite direction. In her article 'Male-dominated computer world - women's paths to informatics' she further unveils this phenomenon by analyzing biographies of women, who already found their way into computer science. In her biographical approach, the author has these women report on their motives for choosing informatics. There are many reasons why relatively few women are studying MINT subjects. As the author points out, social stereotypes play a major rote when choosing subjects. But causes can be found in learning theory as well. Students (and mostly female students) are impaired because teaching in science-related lessons often benefits serial learners, while holistic learners - to which the majority of students belong - have their difficulties with this kind of teaching. And since students use preferences and achievements in school to predict a possible success in their studies they turn away from MINT subjects." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:What can still be chosen? : possible choices in studies (academic) after the Bologna change; an empirical study of Bachelor degrees in political science in Germany and Switzerland

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Within the interesting - certainly initially narrow - extract of a subject, the author's result shows differentiated outcomes, which nevertheless allow a conjoint conclusion. In an area that previously used 'impressions' for argumentation, empirical studies provide solid foundations for pending curricular revision decisions, which provide guidance for all aspects of reaccreditation. These studies are necessary for a representative range of study courses, since the faculty cultures have - traditionally and under the Bologna structures - led to quite different levels of regulation."
