(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This study aims at detecting specific personality predictors of stationary psychotherapy outcomes to describe 'faking good' as a dysfunctional male behaviour to deny illness. The data used in the study come from a survey of 1636 male and female patients at a German clinic of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy in 2011 and 2012. Prior to therapy, the patients completed the PSSI (Kuhl/Kazén 2010) and the SCL-90-R (Derogatis 2001). After finishing therapy, they again completed the SCL-90-R to control for therapeutic success. Correlations were calculated between the PSSI scales and the level of significant positive and negative changes in SCL-90 scales (min. = 0, max. = 9). For male patients, high scores in negativistic personality were expected to predict the positive outcome and low scores to predict failure. Mediation analyses for both years supported the hypothesis, with self-critical personality scores as the mediator." (author's abstract)

The trafficking of men in Cambodia: how masculinities challenge notions of victimhood
Autor/in:
Eastmond, Oonagh
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper addresses the exploitation of Cambodian men on Thai fisher boats. Exploitation is enabled through gender stereotypes that prohibit Cambodian men to identify themselves as victims. In addition, institutions dealing with legal support of victims are based on gender stereotypes. Thus, mainly sexual exploitation and female victims are focused by organizations of support and the state. There are no legal regulations to persecute exploited men and trafficking of men." Inhalt: Objective: the objective of this study is (re) thinking health actions transiting in that territory, and, in fact, such actions include the entire universe of feelings, doubts and uncertainties that permeate male thinking when it comes to the rectal exam. Method: the method is the design of test characterized as a reflective exercise on a theme, seeking a new way of looking at the subject. Results: masculinity is constructed by the influence of the social imaginary, and cannot ignore symbolic aspects that affect the decision to take the examination. This examination does not only affect the prostate, it touches on the symbolism of the aspects of what is "being a man". "Männer kämpfen, Frauen kochen?!" Zu den Geschlechterverhältnissen in der Euromaidan-Revolution 2013/2014

Autor/in:
Lange, Anja
Inhalt: The Euromaidan revolution is already the third political revolution in Ukraine in recent times. Men and women participated equally in this revolution, but women are often described as "only" being helpers while men "made" the revolution and actively fought at the barricades. The article aims to reflect the gender roles of men and women in this revolution. Interviews, blog notes and scientific articles are utilised to show the tasks and responsibilities of men and women at the Maidan.

Inhalt: Masculine crisis has always been with men and presented in masculine studies, but it becomes popular in the post modern era after crucial events such as feminism, the world wars, economical problems, etc. The issue of masculinity and masculine crisis exists in works of Ian McEwan and this study applies masculine crisis on his Enduring Love (1994). Most of McEwan’s characters are men who seek to find their places in post modern era. Thus this paper focuses on masculine crisis which emerges in Joe Rose, the male protagonist of this novel, when the shattering moments in the beginning of the novel threaten his power and authority which is very important in masculinity of men. There is another factor (homophobia) in the novel that leads him toward masculine crisis as well. All through the novel the male character tries to regain his lost authority and power. At the end of the novel, he somehow overcomes masculine crisis. This paper uses Butler's theory of gender and other critics of masculine studies.
Titelübersetzung:Arbeit und Männlichkeit im Kleinbergbau Katangas
Autor/in:
Cuvelier, Jeroen
Quelle: Africa Spectrum, 49 (2014) 2, S 3-26
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article, based on 16 months of anthropological fieldwork between 2005 and 2012, examines the relationship between work and masculinity among artisanal miners, or creuseurs, in Katanga, the southeastern province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It argues that men's involvement in artisanal mining should be considered not only as an economic survival strategy but also as an attempt to experiment with new ways of being a man in a context of economic crisis and changing gender relations. Furthermore, the article criticizes the tendency to downplay or underestimate the complexity and diversity of processes of masculine identity construction in Africa's artisanal-mining areas. In order to do justice to the intricacy of these processes, the article proposes using concepts and insights from the field of masculinity studies and distinguishing between a levelling and a differentiating trend in artisanal miners' masculinity practices." Titelübersetzung:Islamismus und Männlichkeit: Fallstudie zu Pakistan
Autor/in:
Aslam, Maleeha
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 39 (2014) 3, S 135-149
Inhalt: In Muslim societies, men use Islamism and its variants as means of self-actualization and directly in service of matters associated with personhood, masculinity, and particularly honor. This expressive trajectory i.e. exercising masculinity via Islamism holds true in Pakistan and can be broadly attributed to three elements. First, Pakistan’s postcolonial baggage – a well-documented history of rise of Muslim nationalism, and Islamism in the subcontinent; second, western domination and interference in Pakistan’s socio-economic and political domains (as in competition with Islamic heritage and governance frameworks) affecting some segments (and not all) among Muslim youth; and third, decades of authoritarian rule taking turns with weak democratic governments who have largely disappointed in terms of alleviating absolute to relative poverty, marginalization and alienation troubling Pakistani society. Pakistan’s history and contemporary settings both reveal a dissonance between the prescribed, normative and idealized Muslim masculinity imperatives – and the socio-economic and political location of Pakistani men in the real world. Mostly leading dangerous, disenfranchised, and economically deprived lives it is difficult for them to uphold, for example, Quran’s masculine imperative of being a qawwam or an ethnic normative of honor. Islamism becomes one such avenue that increases the possibility of self-assertion and actualization of masculinity imperatives and as they appear in religious and cultural texts, narratives and anecdotes – for instance the theme of martyrdom. The resulting death will not only be divine, but also heroic. In the presence of precedence i.e. in form of documented history highlighting jihadism – this becomes plausible and ultimately adds to individual and collective rationality among Muslims. To develop these ideas further, this article draws upon empirical data sets and historical archival records.
Titelübersetzung:Male bodies and sperm: Relations between male (lived) bodies and male germ cells in assisted reproduction
Autor/in:
Zehnder, Kathrin
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article investigates the male body and the male lived body in the laboratory of assisted reproduction. The question is considered of the absence of 'the male' in medical analysis and whether the focus is only on the sperm. In the reproduction laboratory the lived male body emerges only in the context of sperm collection. Later, when semen is analysed, the male (lived) body disappears and does not appear again, not even in the fertilisation process. The sperms themselves become a vulnerable substance that needs special protection. In the context of intracytoplasmic sperm injection the individual sperm becomes remarkably significant and achieves a certain corporeality." (author's abstract)
