Inhalt: "Technology has always introduced changes in the way researchers administer surveys. A new technology known as virtual worlds has now emerged that promises to change data collection once again. Virtual worlds are persistent, online, computer-rendered spaces populated by hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people at a time. Previously, this population has only been surveyed in ways that required respondents to exit the virtual world before giving their answers. No survey method has existed whereby they could be surveyed while remaining present in the virtual space. Needless to say, this is less than ideal for any survey about the respondent’s attitudes, perceptions, and behavior within the virtual world itself. This study introduces a method for solving this problem and a tool that allows surveys entirely within a virtual environment. The method is introduced as Virtual Assisted Self Interview (VASI), and the tool for implementing it, the Virtual Data Collection Interface (VDCI). The tool was created and deployed in the virtual world Second Life (SL), where users were asked questions about demographics and quality of life. The valid response numbers for the survey (N=2094) make it the largest in-virtual-world data collection seen so far. This paper discusses the VDCI and describes several different sampling methods, as well as results that provide unique, new insights into virtual world populations. It is found, for example, that the demographic make-up of SL is unlike that of other virtual worlds. Moreover, the SL population is unlike that of other worlds in its approach to gender-switching. The limitations and new hazards of virtual world survey research are also discussed, especially survey "hacking" by individuals hoping to exploit the survey for financial gain. Despite the challenges, the results generally suggest that the VDCI is a valuable new research tool for obtaining representative data on virtual world population." [author's abstract]

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Most studies on the influence of family policy on family structures and other family-related issues account only insufficiently for the role of the father within these structures. This contribution will explore, whether the Austrian welfare state pursues policies aimed specifically at fathers and what is the nature of such policies. The article assumes that political regulations of family are to be regarded between the conflicting priorities of family, labor market and the state, and this is the only way that contradictions in the policy on fatherhood and the ambivalent attitudes of fathers themselves can be explained. In this regard the contribution focuses on exploring the gender paradigm of Austrian policies relating to family issues and the implementation of political and legal measures. Furthermore, the norms and conventional ideas about family, which underlie political decision-making processes, will be reviewed. The results demonstrate that Austrian policies on fatherhood are ambivalent." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "It is recommended that researchers who use mixed modal methods for data collection compare their impact on outcome measures. The purpose of this study was to examine the physical activity and fruit/ vegetable consumption behaviors of a multiethnic sample of adults, comparing participants who continued a telephone survey and those who transitioned from a telephone to a web-based survey for a follow-up data collection point. This longitudinal study used a random sample of 700 Hawaii residents (63.3% Female; Mean age=47, SD=17.1). At baseline, participants completed a computer-assisted telephone interview assessing the stage, behavior, and decisional balance of both physical activity and fruit/ vegetable consumption. For the three-month follow-up survey, participants were given the option of completing the survey either on the web or by phone. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was computed for related physical activity scales and fruit/ vegetable consumption variables to compare the change in response across time between a web group and phone group. For both physical activity and fruit/ vegetable consumption, all mode-by-time interactions were significant). The participants who preferred the telephone survey maintained their levels, whereas those who preferred the web survey reported a decrease in each variable. These results suggest that changing the mode of a survey may introduce a systematic bias in data and that researchers should proceed with caution when using mixed modes of data collection." Zur Produktion von Geschlecht in lebensgeschichtlichen Interviews
Titelübersetzung:Production of gender in life history interviews
Autor/in:
Amesberger, Helga

Inhalt: Gender gaps in educational access, schooling quality and labour market outcomes are pervasive in Pakistan. This brief discusses the findings of three recent studies in Pakistan that highlight the role of education in improving individual productivity, increasing earnings, bringing people out of poverty and providing a pathway to gender equality in the labour market. The papers note the policy implications of the research both for education and labour market policy.
The nature and prevalence of bullying among boys and girls in Croatian care institutions: a descriptive analysis of children's homes and correctional homes

Inhalt: "No research to date has established reliable estimates of bullying behaviour in Croatian care institutions. Drawing upon conceptual and methodological conclusions from the prison-based research in the UK, the present study aimed to explore the nature and extent of indirect and direct bullying in a national sample of boys and girls from Croatian residential care facilities. The study also aimed to assess whether there were gender differences in the frequency and types of bullying as well as whether bullying was more prevalent and serious in Correctional Homes as opposed to in Children’s Homes. The sample consisted of 601 young people aged 11 – 21 from
22 residential institutions in Croatia. Data was collected using an anonymous self-reported questionnaire. Residents were classified as bullies or victims if they reported at least one behaviour indicative of bullying others or being bullied two or three times a month or more often. With this defi nition, approximately three quarters of residents in both Children’s Homes and Correctional Homes were involved in bullying either as victims (66.8% and 56.3% respectively) or as bullies (45.9% and 50.2% respectively). Indirect victimisation was more prevalent in Children’s Homes. In both samples, girls were signifi cantly more likely than boys to be involved
in indirect bullying either as victims or as perpetrators. In Correctional Homes, boys were signifi cantly more likely than girls to bully directly. Although descriptive in nature, this study is the fi rst to offer a comprehensive insight into bullying behaviour in Croatian
residential care. As such, it should serve as a basis for future research." [author's abstract]

Engendering Knowledge in Organisations. Negotiating Development in Local and Translocal Social Spaces
Titelübersetzung:Engendering knowledge in organisations
Autor/in:
Lachenmann, Gudrun
Quelle: Universität Bielefeld, Fak. für Soziologie, AG Sozialanthropologie; Bielefeld (Working Papers in Development Sociology and Social Anthropology, 362), 2009. 18 S
Inhalt: "The paper looks at sites of production and negotiation of development knowledge which constitute translocal spaces and interfaces within organisations and their environment. Taking a gender approach, it assumes that there is a gendered structure of knowledge and that organisations are gendered with regard to conceptualisations and policies. Other dimensions of analysis are that of 'women in organisations' (as actors and members), as well as typical interfaces between different levels of organisations and their environment, i.e. clients and social reality of everyday life. The (global) knowledge society is discussed with regard to its gendered organisation and the issue of legitimate carriers and vertical coherence of social knowledge is addressed, looking at NGOs as knowledge producers which are supposed to contribute valid gender knowledge. The bureaucratic management of knowledge in organisations is studied as leading to technocratic, authoritarian modes, excluding gender knowledge and rendering accumulation of experience and learning impossible. The analysis is based on the study of the 'development world' especially in and regarding (West) Africa. In particular, development of local communities and decentralisation (especially referring to the case of Senegal) shows how female spaces are dwindling. No interfaces exist where women's livelihood-oriented and crosscutting knowledge and experience could be brought into the new formal political structures. There is a process of increasing informalisation of organisations of women, providing room to manoeuvre on the one hand, but also exclusion and marginalisation on the other. Men mainly organise themselves in formal groups, women usually in informal ones, thus diminishing their access to formal institutions and also the production of knowledge from their side - such as alternative modes of accumulation between men in the formal and women in the informal sectors. This hinders the upgrading and (resulting) lack of promotion of gendered forms of social cohesion and security. However, global networking and knowledge production are taking place not only in women's organisations and movements, but also in migration and other translocal spaces, with the internet possibly contributing to more horizontal exchange and enabling diversity."
