"Most people strive for recognition but recognition is distributed unequally. According to the male breadwinner model, men are supposed to earn the family income, while women are supposed to do the housework and perform nurturing functions. This gender-specific model is supposed to be complementary, but in fact it is unequal. During the last decades, the male breadwinner model has been partly eroded. With an increase in the employment of women and the rising orientation towards egalitarian couple relationships, the traditional gender roles now falter. The erosion of this system is especially clear with Dual Career Couples, where two people with similar professional background have to compromise with each other. Thus, the article poses the questions: For what do partners who both work recognize and respect each other? Will there be more equality between the two? As it is shown, inequalities between men and women do still exist - even in the highly qualified Dual Career Couples. Regarding structural barriers in work organizations and in social rights, it is harder for women to gain recognition in the working sphere after giving birth to a child. But men also face structural restraints regarding their participation in the family sphere." (author's abstract)
