Inhalt: Drawing upon my long experience of qualitative migration research, this article uses the concept of "multiple positionalities", to challenge the fixity of positionality underpinning constructions of "insiders" versus "outsiders" in the research process. While "insider" status is usually associated with shared ethnicity/ nationality, migration studies have been urged to go beyond the ethnic lens (Amelina & Faist, 2012; Glick Schiller & Çaglar, 2009). I argue that migrants cannot be neatly contained within fixed "insider" ethnic categories; instead it is more illuminating to consider how identities are re-constructed through migration. In this contribution I use moments from a range of research studies with migrant women in London. In comparing and contrasting my encounters with these migrants, who come from Ireland and Poland, I critically reflect upon how empathy and rapport were negotiated through dynamic rhythms of positionalities-gender, age, professional and parental status and migratory experience, as well as nationality. In so doing, I consider the challenges but also the opportunities of researching within as well as across migrant populations and how this may inform an attempt to go beyond the ethnic lens. Making and Remaking the Transnational: Of Boundaries, Social Spaces and Social Mechanisms

Inhalt: There is now a third generation of transnational scholarship, which goes beyond the analysis of cross-border ties and looks at the genesis, reproduction and change of boundaries in social spaces, both within and across nation-state borders. This analysis proceeds in five steps. The first describes three generations and directions of transnational scholarship. The second part introduces the more specific concepts of transnationalization and transnationality. At the centre of the third part is a comparison of transnational and global and world approaches. A transnational lens looks at how boundaries in cross-border settings evolve and change. The fourth part focuses on the concepts of boundary and social space. The perspective is process-oriented and shows how borders and boundaries are redrawn in a period of intense restructuration of capital, changing geopolitical constellations and new constellations of cultural diversity. In order to move towards causal analysis of boundary change, the fifth part uses a case study to consider the social mechanisms operative in the (un)making of boundaries along diverse characteristics, such as religion, class, ethnicity, and gender. The question for future research is to integrate various (spatial) scales of analysis to arrive at a better understanding of changing forms of social inequality across borders.

Inhalt: The article discusses my experiences of gradual immersion into the community of Polish migrants to Australia, which I joined while researching life writing of Polish post-war women migrants to Australia. I focus on how my assumptions concerning commonality of culture and language transformed during the preliminary stages of my research. I initially assumed that speaking the same language as the writers whose works I study, and their ethnic community, would position me as a person sharing the same cultural knowledge, and allow me immediate access toresearch participants. Yet, the language I considered to be the major marker of ethnic identity exhibited multiplicity instead of unity of experiences, positions and conceptual worlds. Instead, gender, which I had considered a fluid and unstable category highly context-dependent especially
in the migration framework, proved to be an important element of interaction and communication
between myself and my research participants. I have learnt that it is critical for research on
diaspora, including diaspora's literary cultures, to account for other identity markers that include meas a researcher into some Polish community groups while excluding from others. I base my contribution on various kinds of materials, including field notes, fieldwork diaries and interviews with Polish writers as well as secondary literature on Poles and Australians of Polish extraction in Australia. Transnational Social Protection: An Emerging Field of Study

Inhalt: How do the efforts at social protection by cross-border migrants impact upon social inequalities? While the 'old' social question between workers and capitalists was addressed within the frames of national welfare states and social policies from the late nineteenth century onwards, the 'new' social question - running along diverse lines of inequalities, such as gender, class, ethnicity and religion - has implications far beyond national borders since flows of persons, goods, capital and services are transnational. Migrations are of particular relevance for understanding the transnational social question because they link the disparate and fragmented worlds of unequal life chances and social protection. Of particular interest is the question of how cross-border social protection involving migrants results in the reinforcement of existing inequalities, e.g. between regions and within households, and creates new lines of inequalities. This state of affairs necessitates a rethinking of national social citizenship and its significance for the legitimation of social inequalities.

Migration, Geschlecht, Gewalt: Überlegungen zu einem intersektionellen Gewaltbegriff
Titelübersetzung:Migration, gender, violence: towards an intersectional concept of violence
Autor/in:
Sauer, Birgit
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political measures against as well as scientific debates about so-called 'traditional harmful practices' against women in western immigration countries put the necessity of an intersectional concept of violence on the feminist scientific agenda, Such a concept should aim to escape the trap of culturalizing the 'Other'. It should also build the ground to guarantee sustainable harm reduction without stigmatizing minority groups nor victimizing women affected by violence. In the context of a broad feminist notion of violence the article suggests the re-theorization of the concept of violence against women. This conceptualization should include first the interplay of structures and discourses of violence, second the interaction of structures of inequality between minority groups and dominant society, and third the intersection of structures of inequality and violence between gender, culture, ethnicity, religion, and class." Gendered strategies of social support and their inequality effects in the context of German-Ukrainian transnational space

Autor/in:
Amelina, Anna
Quelle: Universität Bielefeld, Fak. für Soziologie, Centre on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD); Bielefeld (COMCAD Working Papers, 67), 2009. 42 S
