Inhalt: This article aims to investigate the role and effectiveness of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the daily lives of the Afghan and Pathan children and youth working on the streets. In this ethnographic research, 30 girls and boys, aged 12 to 16, were involved in the data generation. Three NGOs were selected in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. In this research, children and youth discussed that one of the NGOs is meeting the needs of education and other two NGOs are putting their efforts but to a limited extent. This investigation also revealed that none of the studied NGOs have focused on the work based learning and skills development, however contributing to a very limited scope. The studied group has valued the NGOs' consideration of respect and dignity aspects in their operations. It is concluded that NGOs need to plan comprehensively to play an effective role to improve the daily lives of their target groups such as children and youth working on the streets.

What makes a difference for disadvantaged girls? Investigating the interplay between group composition and positive youth development in sport

Inhalt: It has been suggested that group composition can influence the experiences of individual group members in social programmes (Weiss, 1998). The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between peer group composition in sports programmes and positive youth development (PYD) in disadvantaged girls, as well as to determine whether it was moderated by personal characteristics. Two hundred young women aged between 10 and 24 completed a questionnaire including, among others, the "Youth Experience Survey for Sport" (YES-S) (MacDonald, Côté, Eys, & Deakin, 2012) and questions regarding participants' socio-economic characteristics (i.e., nationality, education, family situation). Multilevel regression analyses were performed to take into account the hierarchical data structure. At the group level, a higher percentage of girls from a low educational track and with a migration background predicted greater PYD, as indicated by higher levels of personal and social skills, cognitive skills and goal setting. Results showed interaction effects between the respondents' family structures on the participant and team levels. The overall statistical models for the different developmental domains accounted for variance ranging from 14,7% (personal and social skills) to 30,3% (cognitive skills). Results indicated that the extent to which disadvantaged girls derive benefits from their participation in sport also depends on the group composition. The interaction effects between the group composition and individual characteristics suggest that when girls participate in a group of similar peers, those from non-intact families will derive more benefits than their counterparts from intact families.
Zeit der Extreme? Rechtsextremismus im Jugendalter
Titelübersetzung:Age of extremes? Young people and right wing extremism
Autor/in:

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The time of adolescence appears to be an 'extreme' time for the developing individual: The rich variety of developmental tasks which girls and boys have to solve during their teenage years is partly held responsible for a certain amount of problem behaviour. Breaking taboos like heavy drinking or being rebellious and also the sticking to radical political ideas are mainly judged as 'normal' events on the way of youngsters to adulthood. So, is political extremism of young people also a mere developmental phenomenon? Using the example of right wing extremism, this paper will argue against the idea that embracing extreme political ideas is a mere developmental phenomenon. Besides the often researched individual reasons for entering political extreme groups there will be emphasized the impact of societal discourses and power relations for adopting political extreme convictions."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'Combining attitudes towards the ideal of democracy, evaluations of the reality of democracy and political interest a typology of four different groups was developed: satisfied, critical-political, critical-unpolitical and detached democrats. Using the data of the three waves (1992, 1997, 2003) of the 'Youth Survey' of the German Youth Institute (DJI) objective and subjective factors of influence were analysed as well as consequences for political trust and participation. The results show that the group of satisfied democrats is nearly double the size in Western Germany in comparison to Eastern Germany. In Eastern Germany, the increase in dissatisfaction with democracy in unified Germany leads to an increase in detachment, in Western Germany to a rise of critical-unpolitical attitudes. Low level of education, feeling disprivileged and socially insecure leads to detached attitudes towards democracy and political participation.' (author's abstract)|

Young people and politics in Eastern and Western Europe

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper considers the kind of political engagement among young people in Eastern and Western Europe, based upon a sub-sample of 16-25 year olds from the World Values Survey 1995-1997 (N=7740). By taking a broad view of politics to include political involvement, political action, civil and political participation, democratic mindedness, the role of 'new politics' and faith in the political system, it is found that young people are both interested and active in politics. The paper considers how these different aspects of politics are associated together along with the regional and demographic variations. The analysis shows that young people are not generally disengaged from politics (as many have claimed) and that those who are most engaged are those with more education, with higher social class and who are male rather than female. The exception is with environmental politics where women are both more active and more concerned than men. The analysis also found that in general, young people in Eastern Europe are less engaged in politics than those from Western Europe, including both conventional and unconventional political activity. Finally we draw up a typology of the different kinds of political profiles of young people and from this we argue that young people are not disengaged from politics, but rather that their involvement in politics takes a variety of different forms. Furthermore this analysis suggests that we need to look at 'lifestyle' politics as an important field of political action rather than only traditional political engagement such as voting or joining political parties."
