Titelübersetzung:The crisis of the national master narratives: a plea for plural, interdependent narratives

Inhalt: "With the concept of a 'master narrative', the cultural turn prodded contemporary historians to become more self-reflexive about their contribution to larger interpretations. Taking a critical look at the dominant explanations of the German past, this essay argues that the national narrative failed with the atrocities of World War Two, while the communist story was discredited by the overthrow of the SED-regime. But West German Gesellschaftsgeschichte also appeared increasingly outdated, since it was reluctant to admit new impulses like everyday history. However, the rising pretenders to grand narrative status were only partially successful, since the Holocaust fixation could not explain post-war recivilization, gender history provided only a partial view, Europeanization tended to legitimize the EU and global history was too encompassing to explain the German past. Instead of narrowing into another master narrative, the new plurality should be seen as an opportunity for a multi-vocal approach to the past, that ought to analyze how of multiple stories are entangled." Rekrutierungsprozesse österreichischer Regierungsmitglieder im Geschlechtervergleich
Titelübersetzung:Recruitment processes of Austrian members of government in a gender comparative perspective
Autor/in:
Schwediauer, Veronika
Quelle: SWS-Rundschau, 52 (2012) 1, S 47-68
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political recruitment processes represent products of the societal and political power relations, which bear gendered structures. A gender-comparative analysis of political recruitment processes is apt to uncover these gendered power relations. A theoretical perspective on power is completely absent in the hitherto produced literature on political recruitment (and gender). Bourdieu's power-centered concepts of field and capital are valuable tools to bridge this gap and to endeavor a gender-comparative (power) analysis of recruitment processes. This article investigates the capital forms and the political careers of the Austrian members of government and their gender-specific effects from the time frame of 1966 to 2006." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: Within the scope of the research project "Female Social Democrats on the Parliamentary Council and the German Bundestag 1948/49-1969," 38 biographies from all the women of the Parliamentary Council (1948/49) and the first five legislative periods (1949-1969) of the German Bundestag were conducted. This paper is about its members Frieda NADIG and Dr. Elisabeth SELBERT. First the methodology and the body of source material will be elucidated. Thereafter, the biographies of the two female members of Social Democrats in the parliament will be introduced up to the point when they were both members of the parliamentary council. The National Socialist period will be discussed within this context since it forms the backdrop for the later political work of both politicians. Thirdly, their common political fight for the inclusion of the sentence: "males and females have equal rights" into the constitution of the German Republic will be presented. Finally, through reviewing the continuing work in various political bodies, the significance of the political institutions that influenced and shaped their lives will be put into historical context.

Partisan competition and women's suffrage in the United States
Titelübersetzung:Parteienwettbewerb und Frauenwahlrecht in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika
Autor/in:
Munshi, Soumyanetra
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 35 (2010) 3, S 351-388
Inhalt: "Though women's suffrage was federally mandated in the United States by the nineteenth amendment in 1920, many states had granted suffrage to women prior to that and most of these early suffrage states were clustered in the west. The author revisits some of the popular conjectures that have been put forward to explain why these states moved first to give women the vote and offer a hypothesis of partisan competition leading to suffrage extension. Using event history analysis, she finds strong evidence that early enfranchisement of women in the western states was driven by the intensity of competition between Republicans and Democrats, as well as by adverse female-male ratios and greater concentration of the population in urban areas. Moreover, as might be expected from the geographic concentration of the suffrage states, she finds evidence that suffrage adoption was strongly and positively related to whether a neighboring state had women's suffrage. Also, the 'risk' of suffrage enactments was increasing over time foreshadowing the success of the nineteenth amendment." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Women in the opposition movement in the GDR: life and collective history processes in a women's peace group
Autor/in:
Miethe, Ingrid
Quelle: Opladen (Forschung Politikwissenschaft, 36), 1999. 299 S
