Inhalt: "No research to date has established reliable estimates of bullying behaviour in Croatian care institutions. Drawing upon conceptual and methodological conclusions from the prison-based research in the UK, the present study aimed to explore the nature and extent of indirect and direct bullying in a national sample of boys and girls from Croatian residential care facilities. The study also aimed to assess whether there were gender differences in the frequency and types of bullying as well as whether bullying was more prevalent and serious in Correctional Homes as opposed to in Children’s Homes. The sample consisted of 601 young people aged 11 – 21 from
22 residential institutions in Croatia. Data was collected using an anonymous self-reported questionnaire. Residents were classified as bullies or victims if they reported at least one behaviour indicative of bullying others or being bullied two or three times a month or more often. With this defi nition, approximately three quarters of residents in both Children’s Homes and Correctional Homes were involved in bullying either as victims (66.8% and 56.3% respectively) or as bullies (45.9% and 50.2% respectively). Indirect victimisation was more prevalent in Children’s Homes. In both samples, girls were signifi cantly more likely than boys to be involved
in indirect bullying either as victims or as perpetrators. In Correctional Homes, boys were signifi cantly more likely than girls to bully directly. Although descriptive in nature, this study is the fi rst to offer a comprehensive insight into bullying behaviour in Croatian
residential care. As such, it should serve as a basis for future research." [author's abstract]

Inhalt: "In this report gender socialization processes should be discussed at the child age and youth age regarding recognition-theoretical approaches and interactional considerations. Extravagating, social labeling, disregards, superiority imperatives, devaluations, and refused recognition are significant not only in the context of xenophobia and politically motivated force, but also mark social practices within the scope of conflict interactions and struggles between genders. On the basis of the results of a qualitative research project with children and youngsters both genders, it can be shown that in the infancy gender conflicts are more likely marked by exceed boundaries, whereas disputes at the youth age concern sexual conflicts with the purpose of reciprocal devaluations." Counter-stereotypic beliefs in math do not protect school girls from stereotype threat

Inhalt: The threat of being negatively stereotyped in math impairs performance of highly qualified females on difficult math tests, a phenomenon known as "stereotype threat"-ST. Perhaps more alarmingly, recent studies based on unselective samples of elementary, middle, and high-school students show that ST also operates in girls from the general population. Here we offer first evidence that ST does operate (with large effect sizes) even in middle school girls who deny the negative gender stereotype. Children's beliefs about the two genders math ability, therefore, do not necessarily moderate their susceptibility to ST, an important issue that remained unclear so far. This new finding is also of great practical significance: School girls’ counter-stereotypic beliefs cannot be taken as sufficient evidence for deciding whether the struggle against ST is or is not needed. Appropriate interventions should be the default option when aiming for true gender equality in math and science achievements.
Interacting with women can impair men's cognitive functioning

Inhalt: The present research tested the prediction that mixed-sex interactions may temporarily impair cognitive functioning. Two studies, in which participants interacted either with a same-sex or opposite-sex other, demonstrated that men's (but not women's) cognitive performance declined following a mixed-sex encounter. In line with our theoretical reasoning, this effect occurred more strongly to the extent that the opposite-sex other was perceived as more attractive (Study 1), and to the extent that participants reported higher levels of impression management motivation (Study 2). Implications for the general role of interpersonal processes in cognitive functioning, and some practical implications, are discussed.

Inhalt: In times of globalisation, dealing with intercultural conflicts has become a major challenge for teachers at school. However, existing research has been limited to an explorative analysis of conflict categories and associated coping behaviour, without addressing the complexity of multinational education settings (Ringeisen et al. 2006, Ringeisen et al. 2007a). In response, the current study examined quality and efficacy of intercultural coping within a theoretical framework, the multiaxial coping model (Hobfoll 1989, Hobfoll 1998). Based on qualitative content analysis of 132 semi-structured interviews with teachers, all reported coping behaviours could be classified within the model. Roughly half were identified as "cautious action", followed by assertiveness (16%) and indirect action (10%). Sex differences were most prominent on the prosocial-antisocial dimension, with women engaging in more prosocial (cautious action and social joining) and men in more self-centered social strategies (antisocial action, aggressive action and seeking social support). Reported efficacy was highest for the three most frequent strategies, as well as for antisocial and aggressive action. In essence, the current study provides first evidence that the multiaxial coping model may serve as a helpful framework not only to theoretically classify coping efforts with regard to intercultural stressors at schools, but also to understand their efficacy in relation to the cultural profile of the sample of interest.

Inhalt: Assumptions about human nature engage the domain of philosophy as a long established matter of discourse. In contrast, comparatively little is known about such assumptions from the view point of differential psychology. A 64-item questionnaire was developed, comprising items, rating scales, and trilemmata, including topics such as brain and consciousness (mind-body), free will, assumptions on evolution or creation of mankind, concepts of god, theodicy, meaning of life. Data were gathered from students at seven German (West and East) universities. The majority of participants (n = 563) were psychology students, and 233 (primarily at the University of Freiburg) were students from other faculties. Assumptions about human nature were evaluated according to concepts of monism-dualism-complementary, atheism-agnosticism-deism-theism, attitude toward transcendence-immanence, and the self-ratings of religiosity and interest in meaning of life. Findings depict a manifold of belief systems, however, there was little difference among psychology students relating to gender, first or second year. Students from psychology, philosophy, and natural sciences showed similar profiles. The majority of participants were convinced that philosophical preconceptions on mind-body and free will could have important practical implications for the way in which psychotherapists, physicians, or judges exercise their profession.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "A growing number of social scientists is concerned with the problem of intergenerational value transmission. Nevertheless, an adequate design for transmission studies has yet to be found. This article on value transmission processes focuses on both methodology and content. A design for value transmission studies is proposed that takes account of: the temporal succession of the value transmission process, gender specificity, effects of both parents on their opposite-sex offspring, and potential contextual factors. Central to the analysis is the assumption that acceptance of parents' values is a child's conscious decision. A model of the transmission of achievement values serves as an example to explore how parents' education and socio-economic status, the age of the child, children's extrafamilial contacts, and the parent-child-relationship either promote or inhibit processes of value transmission."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This contribution is based on the presentation of the Austrian research project 'Population Policy Acceptance Survey' (PPA II), a questionnaire about demographic topics. In 2001, approx. 2.000 persons aged 20-65 were interviewed about their attitudes towards family, family policy and the relationship between the sexes in Austria. Results about the acceptance of non-traditional forms of living together show that marriage still retains a high level of social approval. At the same time, the increase in non-marital living alternatives is met with growing approval by respondents. Further results show that there is basically still the traditional division of labour within the families and that a division of household tasks disadvantaging women has a negative effect on the desire to have children. While Austria does not explicitly pursue a pro-natalist policy, the increased endowment of family-policy measures nevertheless aims at increasing the birth rate. However, when verifying this relationship, no empirical evidence could be found for any decisive influence of increased support allowances on the willingness to have a(nother) child. Furthermore our analysis shows that the sensibility of women for unequal treatment on the job is very pronounced and that they have great confidence in measures to promote the role of women.'
Titelübersetzung:Perception of violence and peer group participation: empirical findings about perception of violence among female juveniles
Autor/in:

Quelle: Soziale Probleme, 13 (2002) 1, S 27-53
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'Recent research indicates that violent behaviour of young people is a group phenomenon. Against this backdrop, the article examines the influence of peer group participation on young women's perceptions of violence. The analyses are based on survey data of fifteen year-old female students living in a Swiss city (Basel). The results show that female juveniles who are members of a peer group perceive violence as less serious, show a higher readiness for violent behaviour, report less fear of violence, and use force more often, but suffer more from it in comparison to young women who do not belong to a peer group. Secondly, the probability of using violence as well as of becoming a victim of violence increases with a growing level of peer group organisation. Further research is needed to answer the questions whether the perception of violence depends on additional factors, e.g. education, and whether these findings are valid for male juveniles.'
