Inhalt: "In the course of educational expansion social inequalities in completion of upper secondary education have declined, while the differences in transition to tertiary education have in-creased. Students from lower social backgrounds are underrepresented in tertiary education and more often choose less prestigious fields of study. In the literature you can find two potential explanations for the observed pattern: On the one hand, the motivation of status maintenance and, on the other hand, cultural reproduction theory. However, it is still less clear which mechanisms are responsible for the observed pattern of social inequality. Drawing on panel-data of German graduates of upper secondary education, the authors estimates the extent and development of social differences in access to tertiary education and in field of study choice and single out the underlying processes and mechanisms. He differentiates processes of status maintenance by the prestige assigned to parents' jobs and processes of cultural reproduction by parental occupations. The findings suggest that social differences in transition to higher education can be largely ascribed to the vertical dimension of social background, while the choice of the field of study is seen more as the result of cultural reproduction processes."

Inhalt: "Children's chances of education depend strongly on their family background, particularly on their parents' levels of education. Their levels of education are also associated with processes of partnership and family formation. These processes precede the children's educational attainment. Particularly relevant is the phenomenon of social homogamy, i.e. the fact that individuals with similar (educational) background tend to form unions. Moreover, educational groups differ in their fertility behavior, i.e. the frequency and the timing of parenthood. This paper analyses the combined impact of these processes on the inter-generational reproduction of educational behavior. Empirical analyses draw upon data from the West German Life History Study. The results indicate that a large part of the observed educational reproduction between parents and children can be attributed to socio-demographic processes, which are located mostly outside the educational system." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The purpose of this article is to reveal the significance of social capital for individual educational opportunities and the acquisition of knowledge. Hereby, social capital should not be thought of as separate from other forms of capital, for network relationships offer little help, if anyone connected to other individuals in the network has few resources at hand. Based on these considerations, we will first provide a short overview of the educational context in Germany and then examine, besides social capital, the influence of economic and cultural capital on the development of competencies and the course of education. Moreover, the authors call for not underestimating the institutional level and "subordinate" composition effects beyond micro-level examinations. Furthermore, the authors suggest for future research on the topic of social capital and education to pay greater attention to classmates and friends in addition to parents and siblings; to view not only formal certificates but also competencies as resources; and to consider the sustainability of networks and the utilisation of capital. In order to achieve this goal, a more interdisciplinary approach and broad longitudinal studies are needed." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "How does the distribution of social capital differ in European countries which participated in the European Social Survey 2002/03 and 2004/05? An index of social trust and the rate of membership in at least one civil association are used for operationalizing social capital. We do not only analyze which country characteristics correlate with high average measures of social capital at the macro-level of countries, but in addition we investigate which of these factors are correlated with high inequality in the distribution of social capital. Theoretical reasons are brought forth to explain the possible effects of these characteristics on unequally distributed social capital and of feed-back effects of social capital on these country characteristics respectively. It can be shown that high levels of income and education, low inequality of income and high levels of health expenditures and democracy correlate with high values of social trust and high proportions of membership in at least one civil organization. Distinctive inequalities of social capital can be found in countries with low levels of expenditures for education, low democratization and a small ratio of working women in relation to working men. Whether single countries (outliers) significantly influence these results is examined." (author's abstract)
