Inequalities and the Paradigm of Excellence in Academia
Herausgeber/in:
Jenkins, Fiona; Hoenig, Barbara; Weber, Susanne M.; Wolfram, Andrea
Quelle: London: Routledge (Routledge research in gender and society, 99), 2022.
Inhalt: This volume examines the criteria of excellence producing inequalities of gender in the daily working environment and evaluation of academics.
Policy makers have increasingly placed emphasis on gender equality as part of a strategy for achieving research excellence, and efforts to reduce gender bias have become mainstream. This book suggests that this goal has remained elusive in practice due to continuing under-representation of women across many academic and scientific fields. Questioning the old structures of male-dominance still prevalent in national research policy, the book explores the effects of institutional values and practices on the careers of academics, particularly the academic identities of women and their career developments.
It focuses on case-studies drawn from Europe while also highlighting the rise of new forms of public management and a neo-liberal framing of the value of academic work, that have a much broader global reach. Using participatory research, the book analyses contemporary forms of ‘gendered excellence’ in an intersectional and international perspective. It will be of interest to junior/senior researchers, teachers and scholars in Sociology, Education, Gender Studies, History, Political Science and Science and Technology Studies.

Gender, Power and Higher Education in a Globalised World
Herausgeber/in:
O'Connor, Pat; White, Kate
Quelle: Cham: Springer International Publishing; Imprint Palgrave Macmillan (Springer eBook Collection), 2021, 1.0. 226 S
Inhalt: This book examines persistent gender inequality in higher education, and asks what is preventing change from occurring. The editors and contributors argue that organizational resistance to gender equality is the key explanation; reflected in the endorsement of discourses such as excellence, choice, distorted intersectionality, revitalized biological essentialism and gender neutrality. These discourses implicitly and explicitly depict the status quo as appropriate, reasonable and fair: ultimately impeding efforts and attempts to promote gender equality. Drawing on research from around the world, this book explores the limits and possibilities of challenging these harmful discourses, focusing on the state and universities themselves as levers for change. It stresses the importance of institutional transformation, the vital contribution of feminist activists and the importance of women’s deceptively ‘small victories’ in the academy
The volume is a must-read for anyone interested in fairness and justice around gender". Professor Patricia Yancey Martin, Florida State University, USA

Quelle: transcript, 2021.

Doing equity and diversity for success in higher education : Redressing structural inequalities in the academy
Herausgeber/in:
Thomas, Dave S. P.; Arday, Jason
Quelle: Cham: Palgrave Macmillan, 2021.
Inhalt: “This book provides a forensic and collective examination of pre-existing understandings of structural inequalities in Higher Education Institutions. Going beyond the current understandings of causal factors that promote inequality, the editors and contributors illuminate the dynamic interplay between historical events and discourse and more sophisticate and racialized acts of violence. In doing so, the book crystallises myriad contemporary manifestations of structural racism in higher education. Amidst an upsurge in racialized violence, civil unrest, and barriers to attainment, progression and success for students and staff of colour, doing equity and diversity for success in higher education has become both politically urgent and morally imperative. This book calls for a redistribution of power across intersectional and racial lines as a means of decentering whiteness and redressing structural inequalities in the academy. It is essential reading for scholars of sociology and education, as well as those interested in equality and social justice.”
Universities as political institutions : Higher education institutions in the middle of academic, economic and social pressures
Herausgeber/in:
Weimer, Leasa; Nokkala, Terhi
Quelle: Leiden; Boston: Brill Sense (Higher education research in the 21st century series, 12), 2020. 336 S
Inhalt: Universities can be viewed and studied as political institutions, especially considering that they sit at the crossroads of social, cultural, and economic pressures. The internal and external environment of higher education brings with it multiple and complex relationships as well as power struggles. Within these contested political spaces, there are phenomena to be studied.
While the field of higher education draws from a multitude of disciplines, some scholars argue that only recently has scholarship focused on the political perspectives of higher education. To better understand the politics and policies of higher education, Universities as Political Institutions illuminates a variety of ways that researchers view and study universities as a political institution, from considering the national and international political pressures shaping higher education to the analysis of responses and political action from within the ivory tower.
The 2017 annual CHER conference in Jyväskylä (Finland) brought together 213 scholars from 30 countries. This book includes a selection of papers and keynote presentations from this conference. The thematic approach of the book reflects the 2017 conference theme: "Universities as Political Institutions – Higher Education Institutions in the Middle of Academic, Economic, and Social Pressures". The theme focused on multiple and often complex relations and relationships, internal and external, to higher education institutions. In this context, "political" refers not only to definitions, uses, and users of power but more broadly to a variety of relationships among different actors and agencies responsible for making, executing, or resisting decisions concerning higher education institutions.
