Inhalt: "Since the collapse of state socialism in Poland in 1989, a rapid decline in fertility has been observed in parallel with educational expansion. Polish women with university degree tend to postpone their childbearing, and often have fewer children than their less educated counterparts. Thus, an increase in the number of highly educated women may have an impact on the future fertility development of a country. The birth of a first child is fairly universal in women's lives in Poland, hence, this study focuses on the transition to the second child. Using the Employment, Family and Educational Survey (2006), several piecewise exponential models where estimated. The analyses reveal a strong negative effect of women's education on the second birth risk. The authors conclude that Polish women with university degree are exposed to higher opportunity costs, and these are not addressed adequately by existing family policies and labor market regulations related to working mothers." Inhalt: "This study aims to describe the professional and labor situation of former graduate students from the Faculty of Education at the University of Extremadura, analyzing the education received, paying special attention to the study of gender differences. As the authors can show, there are gender differences between male and female graduates of the Faculty of Education in their transition to the labor market. They used a triangulation based methodology (using both qualitative and quantitative data). These data were obtained by means of a questionnaire and open questions based on it answered by graduate students, as well as discussion groups with graduates, employers and other people involved in these issues." "Zur Denaturalisierung" : Wissenschaftlerinnen und Akademikerinnen in Spanien
Titelübersetzung:"Denaturalization" : female scientists and female academics in Spain
Autor/in:
Santesmases, María Jesús
Quelle: Feministische Studien : Zeitschrift für interdisziplinäre Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung, Jg. 29 (2011) Nr. 1, S. 52-64
Inhalt: "This contribution intends to show the position achieved by the studies of women in academics, and of gender studies and women scientists in Spain. The analysis of the current situation suggests that a transition is taking place toward the de-naturalization of androcentricism, both of figures of women in science and in university positions, toward a more equalitarian landscape still shaped, however, by keeping relevant barriers for women. Still segregation and discrimination, both vertical and horizontal maintain academic and scientist women in less powerful positions, thus providing them with comparatively less authority than their male peers. Gender studies still lack academic recognition as a knowledge domain in the university syllabuses. Here a reflexive approach is presented. Women professors and researchers are in a way studying themselves, tracing women genealogies in search of recognition for those women still absent, or until very recently hidden, in the historiography and more widely in contemporary academic bibliography. This absence appears mildly soften by women academic activists with growing intellectual influence, both in the political agenda and in socio-academic practices." (author's abstract)

Mobile Wissenschaftlerinnen : transnationale Verortungen und biographische Perspektiven
Titelübersetzung:Mobile scientists : transnational positionings and biographical perspectives
Autor/in:
Bauschke-Urban, Carola
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The internationalization of the higher education sector goes hand in hand with an increase in transnational career pathways for scientists. The article focuses on biographical interviews with mobile women scientists from different world regions such as India, Ex-Yugoslavia and Germany (with a Turkish migration background). The empirical analysis is based on a theoretical reflection of transnational spaces, postcolonial discussion of the construction of ethnicity/ culture and on intersectional perspectives in biographical research. It is discussed that transnational mobile career pathways can be analyzed within three biographical key concepts. They include 1.) departure as a start of mobility, 2.) arrival in new scientific communities and 3.) transnational networks and connections as the central motif of their lifestyles and career pathways. The highly flexible transnational lifestyles of mobile scientists include high risks and they find articulation in biographical concepts of transnational and gender neutral self perceptions of the mobile women scientists." Gender and transnational plant scientists : negotiating academic mobility, career commitments and private life
Titelübersetzung:Gender und transnationale BiologInnen Aushandlungen zwischen akademischer Mobilität, Karriereplänen und Privatleben
Autor/in:
Pettersson, Helena
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The aim of the article is to analyze how gender intersects with mobility, career and private life among a highly transnational group of researchers, namely plant scientists. The author's hypothesis is that academic mobility and science are constituted with gender as an important incentive. The study is based on ethnographic field work such following observations and in depth interviews with researchers in plant science. The plant scientists work at an international science center in Sweden with co-workers from 35 different countries. Using the concept of "capital", the relationship between mobility, career and gender is problematized. Furthermore, the article will look at the informants' work-life balance, i.e. how scientists manage academic mobility in relation to their private lives." (author's abstract)

Toren, Nina; Kraus, Vered
Quelle: Social forces : an international journal of social research associated with the Southern Sociological Society, Vol. 65 (1987) No. 4, S. 1090-1100
(IAB)
