Inhalt: The two parts of the gender revolution have been evolving side by side at least since the 1960s. The first part, women's entry into the public sphere, proceeded faster than the second part, men’s entry into the private sphere. Consequently, many employed mothers have carried a greater burden of paid and unpaid family support than fathers throughout the second half of the 20th century. This constituted women's "second shift," depressing fertility. A central focus of this paper is to establish second shift trends during the second half of the 20th century and their effects on fertility. Our analyses are based on data on cohort fertility, male and female labor force participation, and male and female domestic hours worked from 11 countries in Northern Europe, Western/central Europe, Southern Europe, and North America between 1960/70 and 2000/2014. We find that the gender revolution had not generated a turnaround, i.e. an increase in cohort fertility, by the end of the 20th century. Nevertheless, wherever the gender revolution has made progress in reducing women’s second shift, cohort fertility declined the least; where the second shift is large and/or has not been reduced, cohort fertility has declined the most.

Inhalt: This book is dedicated to the role of work organizations when it comes to the realization of an active fatherhood. Firstly, it deals with barriers for active fatherhood and its correlating mechanisms of inequality: Which aspects of discrimination and social closure do fathers face today if they assert a claim for active fatherhood, and with what kind of barriers are they confronted? Secondly, capabilities of fathers are addressed: Which is their possible scope of action, and which factors lead to differences in capabilities at the workplace? Finally, the book analyzes the meaning of organizational rationalities, and the effects of policies and programs on change and organizational learning with respect to fatherhood.

Designing gender-equalizing parental leave schemes - what can we learn from recent empirical evidence from Europe?

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article conducts a systematic review exploring the link between parental leave policies and the gender division of labour. The reviewed material encompasses quantitative empirical articles that study the effect of a variation in leave policies on mothers’ integration into the labour market and on fathers’ engagement in family work. The analysis focuses on studies that were (i) conducted between January 2000 and May 2014, (ii) conducted in European countries, (iii) published in peer-reviewed journals and (iv) written in English or German. The analysis suggests that there are several aspects of parental leave that seem to be especially relevant in designing genderequalizing parental leave schemes. With regard to the effects of leave on mothers’ employment, it seems crucial that the duration of leave and payments provided is of a moderate length. With regard to the effects of leave on fathers’ engagement in family work, it seems most important to provide leave that is explicitly reserved for fathers. In addition, studies consistently find that leave policies affect women very differently with regard to their levels of education and income." (author's abstract)

Mentoring for young female practitioners and scientists in spatial and environmental planning in Germany - experiences of the joint mentoring program of the Academy for Spatial Research and Planning and the Association for Spatial and Environmental Research
Quelle: International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, 5 (2015) 4, S 129-138
Inhalt: In order to overcome the underrepresentation of women on higher management levels in planning, the Academy
for Spatial Research and Planning (ARL) and the Association for Spatial and Environmental Research (FRU) in
Germany jointly have elaborated a mentoring program for young female planning practitioners and scientists.
This article introduces objectives and elements of the mentoring program being considered a strategic talent
development in a network of excellence. Results from a survey among the mentees and mentors of five subsequent
years are presented revealing the principal verification of the program with its main elements: one-by-one
mentoring for one year each, joint events, qualification classes for the mentees, projects by mentees and support
with publications, and a final certificate. The survey reveals the need for several modifications, such as the
introduction of target agreements at the beginning of a mentoring period, the modification of the project study as
well as the extension of the mentoring period, which are discussed in detail. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the program efficacy and transfer.
Zeit, Geld, Infrastruktur?

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The ageing society is increasingly drawing attention to how work can be reconciled with care work. Rising numbers of frail elderly and the challenge of providing nursing care are closely connected to the debate around gender equality. From a theoretical point of view, care-giving relatives need a 'right to care' as well as a 'right not to care'. This addresses the key questions of gender equality on the labour market, the gender division of labour within the family and the organisation of care involving the state, the market and the family. The article analyses which instruments and measures successfully help to reconcile work and care work, and discusses the impact of public policies and companies' social policies on carers." Inhalt: "The article points out that the politics of gender equality in Germany have lost the perspective of a feminist critique within the last decades. The topic of care and reproductive work has been completely neglected, the debate is focused only on the employability of women and their integration in the national workforce. The working concept that underlies this development reproduces the separation of paid labor and reproductive work and refers women to the capitalist jobmarket, promising to find equality and liberation there. The article refers to Angela McRobbie and Nancy Fraser, it questions the narrow-minded labor-market-orientation of today's women's policy and calls for a renewal of a feminist critique of the concept of wage labor.
