Inhalt: "Starting from the hypothesis discussed in research on masculinities and fathering that 'involved' fathering is incompatible with hegemonic masculinity, this paper examines continuity and change in interrelating work and family life by German fathers. Within the sociological frame of interaction theory on un/doing masculinity I focused on the production and presentation of gender differences and the hierarchizing demarcation against femininity and non-hegemonic masculinities within the couple. Based on 27 qualitative couples' and individual interviews, three forms of re/production of masculinity were constructed and discussed along the dimensions of vocational/career concepts, financial care of the family, and parental leave arrangements within the couple. The results show that the re/production of masculinities within negotiations of the couples regarding paid and family work are fragile, challenged, or episodically undone. This implies that in addition to welfare state policies and work organizations, the negotiations within the couple about their division of paid and unpaid work have significant consequences for the un/equality between the parents." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The social understanding of fatherhood is currently changing. This transition becomes visible not only in cultural concepts of 'active' fatherhood but also in new policies and an increasing number of work organizations that address fathers in their offers to reconcile family and a career. In real life, though, employees are still expected to be constantly available and to consent to career norms that reproduce hegemonic masculinities. This is a strong indicator of organizational norms that limit fathers' capabilities to get involved in the family. In our paper, we argue that hidden rules in organizational culture may counteract official organizational policies of family friendliness. We ask how organizational contexts influence fathers' sense of entitlement and to what extend these factors are gendered. In our argumentation, we refer to case studies of seven work organizations of different economic sectors." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: In this contribution we discuss the question of whether the so-called "feminization" of medicine challenges persisting power structures in the field. The notion of the "feminization of medicine" implies both the "masculinity" of the field and its change due to the increasing number of female medical doctors. We present the comparative analysis of two group discussions from the longitudinal study "Career Paths and Career Breaks of Medical Doctors During Residency" (KarMed). One discussion was held with women, one discussion with men, all of whom had just completed their medical studies. In both discussions the theme of gender came up manifestly in the discursive context of the so-called "feminization of medicine". The discussants contrasted this "feminization" with the mythologically laden "masculinity" of surgery. The material of our group discussions indicates a persistent masculine norm in the perception of both female and male doctors. Despite all differences between their members, the group of men constituted itself as a group of medical doctors representing the masculine norm. The group of women constituted itself through shared identifications as "women in medicine". We analyzed the material with psychoanalytic methods in social research and we discuss our interpretations in relation to the notions of "feminization" and of "hegemonic masculinity".

Inhalt: The starting point for this article is the supposition that two significant female 20th century intellectuals, Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, have so far received only modest recognition for their achievements. The article briefly outlines the remarkable achievements of these two authors and activists and then analyzes the reception of their work. A number of events and processes can be identified which resulted in the misinterpretation and less than satisfactory consideration of their contributions. Theoretical approaches in the fields of political philosophy and political sociology are applied in the course of this analysis. Both the political system and asymmetrical gender power relations contributed in various ways to the false interpretation of the achievements of the two intellectuals. On account of their untimely deaths, both women were unable to build up their academic reputations, for example by means of being visible to and in contact with the public. The article demonstrates the need for further research into the biographies and legacies of Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, including from the feminist perspective. It also aspires to stimulate this critical discourse.

Inhalt: "The following article makes a contribution to the study of opportunities and difficulties of female East German political mandate holders, and justifies the use of an analytical biography approach. The article is empirically based on the results of my dissertation project East German women in politics. A qualitative analysis. In this present paper I discuss the reasons why exactly the biography-analytical approach is suitable to explore topics of the intertwining of 'outer' life course and 'inner' sedimentation of biographical experiences. The key results of my study are outlined. It is shown that especially the rapid political and socio-cultural change within the former GDR in 1989/1990 offered unique participation opportunities for politically ambitious East German women to pursue a career as parliamentarians after a radically new political scene had been set up. The article also focuses on the paradoxes that the contemporary female mandate holders tend to be confronted with; these paradoxes are exacerbated by the ascribed genderized roles of female politicians. On the empirical base of my (finished) research project, this paper attempts to generate analytical categories and to discuss with their help the work and life situation of women socialized in East Germany within political arenas. The analysis will be pursued in a biography-theoretical perspective, and some ofthe particular features of the field of research of East German women in politics will be formulated." Inhalt: "Taking a look back in history, or at least, at what is presented to us as history, it becomes apparent that it is a meta-narrative shaped by men, a 'his-story', based on an androcentric worldview. The histories of disciplines such as communication science, too, are for the most part concerned with and told by men. Only infrequently, at the sidelines, do women appear. Besides the question of gender as a consequential social marker there is also the question of generation as a cohesive element. This article deals with the life and work of five of communication science's female academics from Germany and Austria (Herta Herzog, Elisabeth Noelle, Marianne Lunzer, Hertha Sturm, Elisabeth Löckenhoff), who belong to the age cohort of those born between 1910 and 1930. Although these female academics do share some common characteristics with respect to their countries of birth, their professions, their sex and the generation to which they belong, they are different in many ways when it comes to their lives and their career paths - compared to one another and to their (male) colleagues. It is these differences and similarities that I will focus on, before discussing the extent to which it can be useful to examine the historical development of an academic field from a gender perspective." Inhalt: Austria has a long tradition of gender equality policy measures in science, academia and research. Since the 1980s, a mix of measures has been successively introduced to promote excellent female scientists and academics, establish women’s and gender studies and remove the structural barriers for women. Accordingly, an increase in the share of women in all areas and functions in science, academia and research and the inclusion of gender studies in an increasing number of disciplines has been achieved in recent years. Despite this, the notion of the “scientific ideal” has remained almost unchanged, i.e. is still based on a typically male scientific career. This notion essentially considers a “good” scientist to be one who can devote his life totally to science and has no other restrictions on his time or commitments outside science. The question now is, what – and where – can we add to the existing policy mix to change this situation, i.e. to revise this notion of the “ideal”. At a series of workshops, researchers, academics and other experts used creative methods to develop their visions of a gender-neutral landscape in science, academia and research in 2025. These visions were then used to identify relevant fields of action for initiating cultural change. This paper summarises the results of this discursive process and outlines how the process that began with this project could now be continued.
