Inhalt: Im universitären Kontext gehören Mentoringprogramme seit Jahren zu den zentralen Maßnahmen zur Förderung der Gleichstellung von Frauen und Männern. Über die Akzeptanz, Umsetzung und Zielerreichung von Mentoringprogrammen für Frauen an Universitäten liegt eine Reihe von Informationen vor. So wurden einzelne Projekte für Wissenschafterinnen evaluiert und auf Basis der Ergebnisse weiterentwickelt. Einige Fragestellungen wurden bislang jedoch noch nicht diskutiert. Diese ergeben sich zum einen aus aktuellen hochschulpolitischen Entwicklungen und zum anderen aus der aktuellen Literatur zu Mentoring. Konkret werden folgende Fragen durch die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes diskutiert: Mit welchen Herausforderungen sehen sich Mentoringprogramme aktuell konfrontiert? Inwiefern besteht Weiterentwicklungsbedarf bestehender Mentoringprogramme? Unter welchen Bedingungen können etablierte Mentoringprogramme, die als frauenfördernde Maßnahmen konzipiert sind, auch für weitere Diversitätsgruppen geöffnet werden? Welches Potential ist mit der Weiterentwicklung von Mentoring in Richtung Sponsorship verbunden? Inwieweit können Mentoringkonzepte, die sich im universitären Bereich bewährt haben, auf den außeruniversitären Bereich übertragen werden? (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: In the university context, mentoring has long been one of the key measures used to promote gender equality. Accordingly, a range of information is available on the acceptance, implementation and performance of mentoring programmes for women at universities. A number of projects for researchers have already been evaluated and adapted in line with the findings. Yet current developments in higher education policy on the one hand and contemporary literature on mentoring on the other have raised a number of questions that have not as yet been discussed. These are the questions that will be addressed in particular in this anthology: Which challenges confront mentoring programmes at present? To what extent do existing mentoring programmes need to be adapted or developed further? What is needed to open up the mentoring programmes established as measures to advance women to other diversity groups as well? What potential does the development of mentoring in a sponsorship direction hold? Can mentoring programmes which have proved their worth in the university sector be transferred to the non-university sector? (author's abstract)
The challenges to professional standing among academics

Inhalt: In this paper, the author looks at the challenges to professional standing among academics. Using Michael Zweig's contention that, "The challenge to professional standing among academics is not only a question of tenure" (27), the author explores this perspective by examining the state of higher educational institutions and 21st. century trends and factors that affect academic standing across universities and colleges. The author views the changes in human values and profession, global cultural transition, and the changing face of the university from an intellectual to a corporate-oriented model among the factors affecting the professional standing of academics. The transition of the university from faculty-oriented and controlled to administrator-oriented and operated, is seen as a critical factor in this regard as advocated by authors Benjamin Ginsberg and Steven Johnson. Other factors affecting professional standing are related to traits including gender and race as evident from the works of Diggs, Garrison-Wade, Estrada, and Galindo. The author examines the perspectives of several authoritative writers and sources including Ginsberg, Readings, Newman, and Johnson on the university and faculty standing. The author concludes that as colleges and universities are increasingly confronted with new challenges, professional standing among academics will continue to be challenged.

Inhalt: Die Einführung in den Themenschwerpunkt stellt die drei Hauptthemen der Beiträge vor: die Debatte zur sogenannten Insider-Forschung, die Herausforderungen der Geschlechteridentitäten in der Forschung und das Problem der Überwindung des methodologischen Nationalismus und "Gruppismus" in der Migrationsforschung. Die Dichotomie von Insider/Outsider wird in der Literatur seit mehreren Jahren umfassend diskutiert; in der Migrationsforschung wird sie mit dem Problem der ethnischen und nationalen Kategorisierungen verknüpft. Wir argumentieren in diesem Beitrag, dass die Forscher/innen diese begrenzte und statische kategoriale Sicht auf ihre Untersuchungsteilnehmer/innen verlassen müssen, um die Dominanz der "ethnischen Linse" in der Migrationsforschung zu überwinden. Mit diesem Beitrag wollen wir die Diskussion über Geschlecht, Identität, Gleichsein, Differenz und Ethnizität anregen mit dem Ziel, die komplexen, wechselnden und multidimensionalen Dynamiken im Forschungsprozess zu beleuchten. Abseits der vermeintlichen Gemeinsamkeiten, die mit dem Insider-Status einhergehen, schlagen wir vor, die Unsicherheit zum Ausgangspunkt jeder Forschung zu machen, um gruppenbezogene Kategorien produktiv zu überwinden und neue methodologische Möglichkeiten der Begegnung mit den Forschungsteilnehmer/innen zu ermöglichen. Inhalt: This editorial discusses the main strings of debates linking the discussions of insider research, gendered identities and concerns of methodological nationalism and groupism in migration studies. The insider/outsider dichotomy has been discussed in the academic literature for many years and in migration research this usually takes the form of ethnic/national categories. We suggest that researchers now need to think of abandoning these narrow and static views of their participants so as to challenge the dominance of the ethnic lens in migration studies. In this introductory article and in the articles that make up this thematic section, we aim to open a critical discussion of gender, identity, sameness, difference and ethnicity to explore the complex, shifting and multilayered dynamics that under-pin research encounters. Far from the assumed commonalities usually associated with "insider" research, we suggest instead that starting from a position of "uncertainty" challenges taken for granted groupist notions and enables researchers to be open to a wide array of possibilities in their encounters with participants. Inhalt: Spaces and places are at the center of the science studies scholarship. Some scholars focus on the spatial circulation of written traces; others focus on the socio-cultural hierarchies reflected in the spatial organization of the laboratories. But most privilege single-case studies as their research method. While single-case studies offer the advantage of providing rich and detailed ethnographic description of spaces, they often fail to explain how imaginary spaces of science are turned into concrete social settings, often with unexpected deviations from their creators’ initial purposes. This paper argues that a comparative approach, which I call “paired biographies,” can help us study the tensions between imaginary and real spaces of science. This method of paired biographies is applied here to trace the attempts (both failed and successful) by two prominent physicists (J.R. Oppenheimer and E.O. Lawrence) to turn their imaginary scientific spaces into concrete places. This comparative approach, based upon paired biographies of various laboratory lives taken at different points in time, highlights the tensions between imaginary spaces of science and concrete architectural forms (themselves located in broader environments), and shows which unexpected outcomes derive from these tensions.

Gender in digital games: gameplay as cyborg performance

Inhalt: Computer games have now been around nearly forty years. The pace at which computer games have transformed has been so fast that at times it is exceeding thoughtful evaluation and criticism. Since the beginning of the 2000’s, academic understanding of this phenomenon has been trying to catch up with this pace. Feminist studies has also been observing computer gaming, theorizing it as another male-dominated cultural domain. Most of the feminist inquiries in this area have focused on representations of gender and violence in games. Focus on gender and identity relationships between the game players and game characters, has been relatively small. What mostly missing from the current research, is the gender transgressions and alternative subjectivities that might hold political meanings besides the personal ones. Virtual reality communities and massively multiplayer role-playing online games challenge the ideas of identity and gender. As the computer gaming world grows larger, gender representations are becoming more fluid and ambiguous; the possibilities of subversive readings of gender and alternative subjectivities expand.
