Despite the social normalisation and moral de-problematisation of separation and divorce, they are usually anything but normal or unproblematic events for those affected. The events have to be ordered, the separation needs to be legitimised and one's own identity requires rehabilitation; this can result in striking narrative dynamics in qualitative interviews dealing with separation. Previous research has revealed the connection between the form, content, and function of separation talk as well as social differentiation: role, gender, and socio-structural factors. To the functional analyses of the narratives, of 46 interviews (23 ex-couples) in our study "Couples after separation", we add, as a further and superordinate differentiation, the category of social milieu. We exemplify our argument that separation talk varies depending on this dimension by exploring the contrasting individualised and traditional milieus. They differ in a fundamental way in their relationship models and corresponding separation legitimations, and in their plausibility strategies and in their conception of what constitutes a desirable identity. Beyond the concrete subject of separation and separation talk, we also touch on two important aspects of qualitative research: the differentiation of milieus and the relationship between performance and representation in interviews.

There recently was a highly emotional debate in Germany regarding what to teach children about sexual plurality; different actors accuse each other of wrongful indoctrination. This paper presents a computational model based on the results of the SINUS youth study 2016 indicating that the dynamics of adolescents finding their own stance towards sexual plurality are resilient towards external pressure by clerical or government activities. Instead, civil society plays a strong role in the process of children developing their own opinions. This underlines that values in society can be reproduced between generations.

"Ritualized hostile behavior towards male homosexuality is prevalent among male youth. Boys are often ignorant about male homosexuality, exclude homosexuals, and/or are violent towards them. This article, which is based on the interpretation of empirical material collected through focus group discussions, proves how gay men can be treated with an open-minded acceptance instead of exclusion and stigmatization. The article shows that the boys' group formations, i.e. peer groups and cliques, have an impact on how male homosexuals are treated. Our study demonstrates the ambivalences of insecurity and constant scrutiny of one's own male role and identity which need to be generated in this process of recognition." (author's abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to show how psychological trauma resulted from conflicts such as colonialism, immigration, racism, wars and invasion; and even gender discrimination makes its way into postcolonial children's literature. For example, some contemporary writers of children's literature depict the painful experience of young immigrants who are living under constant stress and tension. Others try to depict how the Middle East conflicts and turmoil affect children living under occupation. In all of these cases, children are highly at risk of psychological trauma. This paper is going to discuss two contemporary children's novels which address the issues of immigration and war conflicts: Marina Budhos' Ask Me no questions (2007), and Cathryn Clinton's A Stone in my Hand (2002). They were chosen to reflect not only the variety of children's literature available, but also the unique struggles faced by young female protagonists living in two different cultural and political environments. The common thread running through these two novels is the experience of emotional trauma that young protagonists go through. The study of such trauma is at the core of the discussion of both novels. The paper will show how the protagonists of the two novels suffer "a double or triple trauma for children, who may witness the forcible removal of the parent, suddenly lose their caregiver, and/or abruptly lose their familiar home environment" (McLeigh)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt:
"In addition to providing information, picture books have a great influence on language learning and the development of cognitive skills. They thus make an important contribution to children's culturalization process, and as a conduit of social discourses they transport ideas of gender and men's and women's (a)typical behaviour. Using data from 6,117 characters in 133 picture books which are currently being read in child day care facilities, the article examines the following questions: What is the binary gender distribution in picture books? Are gender stereotypes reproduced or are they softened? Do picture books add to the heteronormative dualism of men and women?" (author's abstract)
