Inhalt: Würdigung und biographische Angaben von Gertrude J. Robinson anläßlich ihres 70. Geburtstages. Die in Hamburg gebürtige wanderte 1947 in die Vereinigten Staaten aus, wo sie später auch ihre kommunikationswissenschaftlichen Qualifikationen erwarb. Schwerpunkte ihrer interdisziplinär sozialwissenschaftlich orientierten Forschung waren internationale/ politische Kommunikation, Nachrichtenfluß und Gatekeeperforschung. An die McGill University in Montreal berufen, baute sie das erste kanadische Graduate Program für Kommunikationswissenschaft auf und lehrte dort viele Jahre. Weitere wesentliche Stationen und Aspekte ihrer Arbeit (u.a. lehrte sie in den letzten Jahrzehnten auch häufig als Gastdozentin an deutschen Hochschule) werden beschrieben. (BM)

Why are women academics so relatively disadvantaged and men so firmly in control?In an attempt to find answers to these questions, Negotiating the Glass Ceiling gathers together the unique personal reflections of sixteen eminent women working in higher education across the world. These reflections document some of the changing patterns of women's lives in higher education since the war, a time of massive social change within higher education itself, as well as in women's lives outside higher education. Inhalt: Der Sammelband enthält die Dokumentation einer Tagung von 1989 zum Thema "Feministische Wissenschaftlerinnen im Dialog mit der männlichen Wissenschaft". Nach einer kurzen Einleitung, die inhaltlich die Perspektiven der Frauenforschung in der Bundesrepublik skizziert und auch Daten nennt, wird zunächst die Podiumsdiskussion zwischen allen Beteiligten wiedergegeben. Es folgen vier Dialoge zu unterschiedlichen Themen zwischen jeweils einer Wissenschaftlerin und einem Wissenschaftler. Dabei werden die Bereiche Soziologie (Wissenschaftstheorie und Methodologie), Ökonomie (Frauenforschung und Nationalökonomie), mittelalterliche Geschichte (Geschlechter- und Sozialgeschichte) und Pädagogik (Jugend- und Jugendforschung) abgedeckt. Den Abschluß bildet ein Beitrag zur Frauenforschung im internationalen Kontext. Insgesamt wird konstatiert, daß auf dem Gebiet der Diskriminierung bzw. Gleichberechtigung noch ein großer Handlungsbedarf herrscht. (ICE)
