CEWS is turning 25!
That's reason enough to celebrate and look back on a quarter century of achievements. Join us this year in looking forward to various anniversary activities, such as a special edition of the CEWS/journal, a colloquium, and updated infographics with facts and figures. CEWS will also look back on highlights from projects, events, publications, and services.
25 Years of CEWS - now with a new name!
As part of our anniversary activities we are giving ourselves a new name: Center für Geschlechterverhältnisse in der Wissenschaft. Internationally, we will use the name Center for Gender Relations in Academia in the future. The well-established abbreviation CEWS will remain unchanged.
Anniversary edition of CEWS/journal
In issue 2025|3, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of CEWS! In the feature article, Andrea Löther looks back on the milestones, challenges, and successes in CEWS' work regarding the development of gender equality in German academia. In addition, a special supplement complements the feature article and presents 25 highlights from 25 years of CEWS.
CEWS Colloquium on bias and (intersectional) science careers
On October 29, 2025, the CEWS Colloquium with Christiane Spitzmüller took place on the topic of “The Science of (Intersectional) Science Careers: Bias in Academic Promotion Processes”.
As part of CEWS’ 25th anniversary year, this lecture reflected the Center’s long-standing engagement with the issue of bias, which has remained a persistent challenge throughout its history. The event also highlighted CEWS’ international orientation and its commitment to promoting gender equality through an increasingly intersectional lens.

CEWS Ranking in 2025
In CEWS' anniversary year 2025, the 12th edition of the ranking of higher education intitutions by gender equality aspects has been published (in German).
The CEWS ranking is an established tool for gender monitoring. It provides information on the development of gender distribution at individual higher education institutions and highlights gender equality trends at the state level.
New in 2025: Thanks to a revised methodology, all higher education intitutions now have the opportunity—and the incentive—to make it into the top group!
Below you will find activities from previous anniversaries, such as our film with voices from academia on our 20th anniversary.
"Stimmen aus der Wissenschaft": a film for CEWS' 20th anniversary
CEWS asked actors from the fields of university management, gender research, and gender equality practices as well as diversity practice for their perspectives on gender equity in higher education. You can start the film (which is in German) by clicking on the arrow.
