SocioHub - The Portal of the "Fachinformationsdienst Soziologie"

Team: David Brodesser, Sebastian Engfer
Leader: Dr. Philipp Mayr
Scientific unit: Knowledge Technologies for the Social Sciences (KTS)

The FID Soziologie has been established since 2016 as a joint project of the University and City Library of Cologne (USB) and GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences. It has been accessible with its SocioHub portal since 2018. It serves as a central contact point for literature search, communication and information in Sociology.

The collaboration platform - one of the two central pillars of SocioHub - offers a variety of opportunities for exchange, especially for research groups, which can use the group presences there as a website. These groups have access to numerous functionalities such as newsfeed, member management, calendar, file storage, collaborative editing of office documents, polls, elections, forum, and event organization. The platform is already being used by numerous research groups. In addition, the collaboration portal offers scientists the possibility to create a personal profile (research profile, contact data, literature lists). Until the end of the current funding period, it will be possible to upload own publications via SocioHub to the Social Sciences Open Access Repository (SSOAR). The contents of the collaboration portal are searchable via the search module.

The search module is the second pillar of the portal. It provides a comprehensive search space in which numerous literature sources are searchable. Also research data entries from GESIS SEARCH is part of the search system. With this, entries from data centers accredited by the RatSWD as well as additional data centers from abroad are searchable via SocioHub.

SocioHub is developed and optimized in close cooperation with the research community. So far, three online surveys were carried out to identify needs of the users. In addition, numerous users and a scientific advisory board accompany the development in a user-centered process.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has been funding the FID Political Science since July 2016 until October 2022.
