Book „Gender and Justice” published with contributions from the CEWS

Categories: GESIS-News

How can gender justice be realized in modern societies? What challenges exist in the evaluation of performance and care work? And what role do power relations play in science and politics?

These and other questions are addressed in the newly published book “Geschlecht und Gerechtigkeit. Aktuelle Perspektiven auf die Entstehung, Reproduktion und Transformation geschlechtlicher Ungleichheiten” (engl.: Gender and Justice. Current perspectives on the emergence, reproduction and transformation of gender inequalities), edited by Dr. Lena Weber (CEWS), Dr. Julia Gruhlich (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen), Prof. Dr. Antje Langer (Universität Paderborn) and Dr. Claudia Mahs (Geschäftsführerin Zentrum für Geschlechterstudien / Gender Studies, Universität Paderborn). The volume brings together interdisciplinary perspectives on the tense relationship between gender, social justice and capitalist structures. The contributions show that as long as care and paid work are unequally valued and linked to binary gender concepts, gender justice will remain difficult to measure - and difficult to achieve.

Dr. Anke Lipinsky, Dr. Andrea Löther and Dr. Nina Steinweg from the CEWS also contributed to the publication: Dr. Lena Weber and Dr. Anke Lipinsky analyze in “Equality between success and resistance. Examples from academic institutions and management levels”, they analyze the contradictory development of gender equality at universities. They show that success and resistance to equality policy often occur simultaneously and discuss the consequences for future equality policy measures.

Andrea Löther and Nina Steinweg examine how universities manage gender equality in departments in their article “Gender equality policy in departments in the tense relationship between hierarchical control, autonomy and competition”. Their analysis shows that gender equality policy is often delegated decentrally to gender equality officers, while department heads rarely consider themselves responsible. They discuss the opportunities and challenges of different management approaches and show that management alone is not enough but must be accompanied by other factors such as gender equality competence at management level.
