Sexual harassment, assault, rape—what is going on at Europe's universities, Anke Lipinsky?

Universities are places of intellect, culture, and progress. But universities are also places of violence, discrimination, and sexual assault. That is the shocking finding of a study conducted in 15 European countries.

The study found that 31 percent of all respondents had been sexually harassed at university, which is one third of all students. A total of 62 percent said they had experienced at least one form of so-called gender-based violence, i.e., physical, sexual, or psychological violence based on their gender. The study also reveals other devastating findings: All forms of violence seem to exist at universities—threats, outbursts of anger, disrespectful language, bullying, harassment, assault, and rape.

Dr. Anke Lipinsky from GESIS is one of the authors of the study and conducts research on gender equality, gender, and sexualized violence at universities. She can explain how the power imbalance at a university encourages abuse of power.
