In the episode from June 24, 2025 of the 3sat science magazine NANO, GESIS colleague Dr. Lisa Schmid has been interviewed on the topic of “Marriage in Transition.”

Every second adult in Germany is married. However, the number of marriages continues to decline. At the same time, marriages are less likely to end in divorce. Are demographic change and later marriage making lifelong unions more stable?

Dr. Lisa Schmid provides insights into the current state of research: “As we have become more liberal in society, we can also be more liberal in our lifestyles [...] and choose marriage as an option, but it is no longer as socially relevant.”

The interview is accompanied by impressive images from the GESIS site in Cologne.
