Angela Merkel was German Chancellor for sixteen years. During her time in office, a number of important achievements in gender equality were made, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage and the disclosure of the gender pay gap. Many hoped that her term in office would lead to greater gender equality. However, misogynistic structures remained in place in public life, as a new study by Jessica Fortin-Rittberger (University of Salzburg) and Christina Eder (GESIS) shows: Deeply entrenched role models and negative attitudes toward women not only influenced the rejection of female chancellor candidates, but also supported the election of conservative and liberal parties.
