The COVID-19 pandemic brought, alongside many changes in daily life, profound effects on our social networks: Many personal contacts were lost, while others emerged—a development that significantly impacted our well-being and, in particular, our experience of loneliness. Which changes in our relationships increased feelings of loneliness, and which connections helped buffer them? Based on data from Germany, this article explores how social networks shifted during the pandemic and highlights the crucial role of relationship quality in shaping experiences of loneliness.
