This systematic review synthesizes more than 900 studies on identity development that have been published since 1966, building on the seminal works of Erik Erikson and James Marcia. In addition to providing a historical overview, the review offers insights into the methods, topics, and structures of identity research and highlights the relationship between identity development and psychosocial functioning.
