Prof. Zoe Lefkofridi, Project Coordinator for the Push*Back*Lash project explains to host Dr. Kristi Winters the motivation behind this research dedicated to nurturing and protecting democracy by explicitly considering intersectional perspectives.
The Push*Back*Lash project
The Push*Back*Lash Project Gender equality is an ongoing struggle, and there is still a long way to go to achieve full equality of rights and opportunities between men and women. In the meantime, a new movement against gender equality is gaining traction in Europe, weakening democracies. The EU-funded Push*Back*Lash project will look at the backlash against feminism and gender equality and its impact on democracy.
It will examine phenomena such as hate speech in social media, anti-equality debates in political parties and parliaments, and citizens’ attitudes towards democracy and feminism. In addition, the project will develop and test counter-strategies that can effectively counteract anti-gender and anti-feminist discourses. To develop sustainable solutions, the research team will bring together gender activists, EU experts and researchers from several fields such as political science, anthropology, communication and media, philosophy, sociology and social psychology.
