A Look Back – Summer School in Survey Methodology 2022

A successful tradition has been continued for the eleventh time. Europe’s leading summer school in survey methodology took place for the first time in a hybrid format from 03-26 August 2022. Over 200 participants from the international academic community took part in a series of excellent virtual and on-site courses on methods and techniques of survey methodology.

Fourteen courses were scheduled, including four short courses and ten one-week courses. Six courses were held on-site in Cologne, and the other eight were delivered via Zoom. The program combined introductory and advanced courses, aiming to suit the preferences and needs of a broader academic audience. Keeping pace with the new trends in survey methodology, three courses were new or wholly redesigned: “Data Science Techniques for Survey Researchers”, “Sampling and Weighting in Survey Statistics”, and “Mixed-Mode Surveys”. Participants evaluated the courses even better than in past years: participants felt satisfied with the course overall, with an average of 4.3 on a scale from 1 (Very unlikely) to 5 (Very likely). 95% of the participants said they would recommend the GESIS Summer School. To quote one participant in the course “Introduction to Survey Design”: “All my questions were answered, and I received helpful feedback on my project. A broad range of topics was covered, very detailed information, and lots of practical references from experience and references to relevant literature.”

As in past years, the Summer School attracted an international scientific audience. 43% came from abroad, making the international character visible again in 2022.

Thanks to funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), 15 participants could participate free of charge and were awarded a scholarship in collaboration with the Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS) of the University of Cologne. Participants from Brazil, Chile, Ethiopia, Hungary, India, Iraq, Israel, Mexico, Spain, Poland, and Turkey were able to finance their participation in the GESIS Summer School with these grants. The cooperation with ESRA allowed us to award scholarships to five participants from Georgia, Germany, India, and Turkey. BERD@NFDI also funded the course fees of six participants from China, Georgia, Germany, Iceland, India, and Turkey for the course “Data Science for Survey Researchers.” Thanks to our cooperation with the Graduate School of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim, participants of the Summer School 2022 were again able to acquire ECTS credits. ECTS credits could be awarded to 11 participants of the Summer School.

A special thanks to our sponsors, infas and Kantar Public.

If you could not make it this summer, please save the date for next year’s event – 02 to 25 August 2023 –on-site at GESIS Cologne and online via Zoom.
