On November 5, 2024, Olaf Scholz applied to the Federal President for the dismissal of Finance Minister Christian Lindner. The governing coalition collapsed over this and early federal elections were called. Elections were to be held in February 2025 instead of September. This presents the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) with the challenge of implementing all survey programs within a few weeks instead of in just under a year as planned.
