Project description
The aim of the dissertation project is the examination of methodological challenges of poverty concepts and the analysis of the statistical validity of poverty estimates. To assess the extent of methodological and statistical uncertainties, the the total survey error model is used.In addition to the interplay between the two appraoches, namely the resource and living standard approach, the main focus lies on challenges in the conceptualization and data collection regarding the living standard. The dissertation project adresses the following challenges: The selection and collection of suitable items to use as deprivation indicators, the aggregation of these into an index, the subsequent weighting of the index and the selection of a threshold value to differentiate between deprived and non-deprived individuals/households. Therefore, official microdata as well as social science surveys within Germany and Europe are analyzed.
