Education Research and Educational Inequality

As a standard procedure, the educational attributes of individuals are compiled in social science surveys and by official statistics and used as explanatory or intervening variables for a variety of phenomena. However, the construction of national education scales is rarely discussed in terms of content, since researchers frequently have access to primary experiences and traditional educational scales are available from statistical offices. Therefore, good measuring instruments are available (cf. e.g. the ZUMA standard demography), and at a national level researchers can frequently refer to their own surveys, thus ensuring optimal measurement of “education” in alignment with the study objective. The construct of the “education system” is more or less represented by the home system. Yet, more complex problems emerge in international comparison. Here, compatible measuring instruments and concepts are decisive to produce meaningful research results, so that extra care is called for when compiling classifications. Information is given here on the development of an internationally comparable classification of education within the scope of the CASMIN project (Comparative Analysis of Social Mobility in Industrial Nations) of the University of Mannheim set up by Prof. Dr. Walter Müller, Wolfgang König, and Paul Lüttinger (ZUMA).
