Nina Baur, Lynn Sibert, Florence Eyok, Lara Espeter, Elettra Griesi & Elmar Kulke: Varieties of Refiguration? Untangling the Dynamic Interdependence between Multiple Spatialities, Spatial Arrangements, and the Economy. [Abstract]
The economy is inconceivable without space, but sociological analyses of the economy tend to lack a distinctly spatial perspective. One way of incorporating space into economic sociological analysis and theorising could be to combine previous concepts with the idea of spatial refiguration. Specific spatial arrangements are characterised by the interplay or conflict of different so-called topological spatial figures (territorial space, network space, route, and place). Since several of these spatial logics can be simultaneously relevant in the same situation, there are convergent and divergent tendencies within spatial arrangements and the socio-historical process of refiguration as a whole. As spatial logics can overlap and spatial arrangements can differ in different (also geographical) contexts, the studies in this special issue observe multiple spatial arrangements. In other words, we find different forms of refiguration in the economy when we look at economic regions, infrastructures, and translocal chains of interdependence.
