Information page on the survey of the scientific community on the GESIS portfolio

Thank you for your interest in our survey on our service portfolio. The aim of this survey is to evaluate the level of awareness and use of the services GESIS provides to the scientific community. The sole purpose of the survey is to improve our service portfolio and to adapt it to the needs of the scientific community. Therefore, we would like to know whether you are aware of the services, to what extent you use them, and how you evaluate them.

You have received an e-mail invitation from us to participate in this survey.

How do we get your e-mail address? We selected universities in Germany and Europe that conduct research and teach social sciences via a random sampling. Your university was selected, and we collected the publicly available email addresses of academic staff, including your email address.

The survey data will be anonymized so that no conclusions can be drawn about you personally.

As a thank for your participation, we will donate one Euro to the following non-profit organizations, from which you can choose one:

  • World Wildlife Fund: WWF is committed to preserving the Earth's biodiversity, using natural resources sustainably, and curbing pollution and harmful consumerism.

GESIS and all contracted service providers work in accordance with the provisions of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and all other data protection regulations applicable in Germany.

Purpose of the survey

We survey you for the purpose of GESIS internal quality assurance and further development of the GESIS service portfolio.

After archiving, the collected data will only be made available for analysis to a selected GESIS-internal circle of employees. The data is stored anonymously and all information that allows conclusions to be drawn about individual persons is deleted beforehand.

What data will be collected?

When you take part in the survey, we will ask you various questions designed to measure awareness, use and, above all, evaluation of our service portfolio. Furthermore, we are interested in which scientific groups know and use us, which is why we also first ask questions about your research area, your research interests, and your status in your scientific career.

For further user surveys, we will also ask for your email address at the end of the interview to contact you again. This information will be kept separate from your interview data. These further user surveys are also concerned with optimizing GESIS's services and aligning them with needs."

Legal basis of data collection

Participation in the survey is voluntary and is based on the declaration of consent given by the participants in accordance with the GDPR. The legal basis for the collection of e-mail addresses of scientific staff required for recruitment is Art. 6 (1) lit. a GDPR. The legitimate interest here follows from the evaluation of the use of GESIS services for the scientific community.

Voluntary participation and right of withdrawal

By participating in the survey, you do not enter into any obligation for further surveys. Termination or cancellation of participation is possible at any time and is not associated with any disadvantages. If you participate, you can also revoke your consent at any time thereafter. Data processing prior to exercising the revocation remains effective.

Who are the recipients of the data?

We work with service providers who support us in conducting the surveys. Employees of the GESIS Presidential Staff and in particular of the Portfolio Management and Quality Assurance team as well as the managers of our services receive access to the anonymized survey data.

The anonymized survey data do not contain any personal reference. GESIS and all commissioned service providers work in accordance with the provisions of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and all other data protection regulations applicable in Germany.

Storage period

The duration of storage of the anonymized survey data depends on the research purpose: The survey data will be stored until the end of 2032 at the longest. After that, a new target group survey will provide GESIS with information on how well known GESIS and its portfolio are in the scientific community.  If you have not provided us with your contact data to contact you again for invitations to further user surveys, your contact data will be deleted after the survey has ended. If you have consented to receive future invitations to further user surveys, the contact data will be deleted in the event of revocation or if an e-mail is permanently undeliverable.
