- explicit statements of career opportunities inside and outside the institute.
In detail GESIS employs the following categories of academic staff:
GESIS works like all the institutes of the Leibniz Community; in close collaboration with Universities. The filling of a vacancy in the leading of a scientific department takes place in the form of a common appeal with the nearby Universities. At the moment we have cooperation agreements with the Universities of Mannheim, Cologne and Koblenz-Landau.
The scientific departments of GESIS are organised in teams, which are each led by a team leader in order to structure responsibilities and pool competences.
After reconciliation with the department, the team leaders evaluate the long-term activity profiles of their team. In succession the team leaders and colleagues of a team agree upon the tasks and aims of each. As the case may be the team leaders will overtake the conceptual mentoring of the research and development projects (the projects cover everything from doctoral studies projects up to bigger third-party funding projects) with respect to their content. The expertise comes along with the responsibility for in-plant cycles like the planning of working time schedules.
Requirements for an employment as team leader are the completion of a doctoral degree or a comparable degree as well as expertise. A pertinent experience is desirable. An employment follows in form of a fixed-term employment contract for the duration of 4 years.
It is possible that the employment contracts of the employees are converted from time-limited contracts into permanent contracts. The appropriate requests can be compiled 15 months before the expiration of the contract. The decision follows on the basis of an evaluation of the employee’s expertise, success in seeking of external funding, scientific service and soft skills.
In its teams GESIS employs post-doc fellows to perform permanent tasks.
Requirement for an employment is the completion of a doctoral degree or a comparable degree. If the position requires academic experience, an employment contract will be concluded for the duration of 2 years. If the position is offered to a recently graduated doctoral degree holder, the fixed-term employment contract will be on a basis of 4 years.
The employment contracts of the post-doctoral research fellows with permanent tasks can be converted into permanent contracts. The appropriate requests can be compiled 15 months before the expiration of the contract. The decision follows on the basis of an evaluation of the employee’s expertise, success in seeking of external funding, scientific service and soft skills.
Junior scientists who fulfil the formal requirements for a Ph.D. student can be employed at GESIS. At the beginning they are employed with a fixed-term employment contract for the duration of 4 years to work in the scientific service of GESIS. As a rule the graduation should be completed within those 4 years. It is the supervisor’s responsibility to arrange enough time for the Ph.D. student to adhere to the given time limit. If the employment contract ends before the graduation is reached, GESIS will exert itself in offering of an ongoing access to the equipment and data that is needed by the PH.D. student for his or her graduation.
The employment takes place in an employment contract on the basis of 75 percent of the standard agreed working time. The Ph.D. student should use one third of his or her working time for the graduation. In connection with the free time due to the part-time employment there is enough time guaranteed to complete the graduation and on the same time an adequate salary is ensured.
If the graduation is taught internally at GESIS, the Ph.D. student will conclude an agreement on the graduation with his or her supervisor.
The conversion of a fixed-term employment contract for a Ph.D. student into a permanent contract is not possible. One year before the expiration of the contract it will be checked if the human resources planning of GESIS offers possibilities for internal applications for free positions, like those of post-doctoral research fellows with permanent tasks.
During the last years GESIS could significantly raise the extent of procurement of its third-party funding. Usually donors of third-party funding are BMBF, DFG or EU. The thematic focus of the projects is usually based in survey methodology, employment-, behaviour- and social structure research, as well as IT and information studies.
The employment of third-party funding financed employees is oriented on the time of the correspondent research project. The position offers the possibility to gain experiences in academic research and development projects. Employed in third-party funding projects are research colleagues with, and without, doctoral degree. To which degree and in which form the advancement of the graduation is possible while working in a fixed-term employment depends on the type of the task. If a graduation is possible, an employee without doctoral degree should connect the employment relationship with the graduation possibility, as a doctoral degree is a requirement for a long-term employment in the German science system.
If necessary, GESIS also temporary employs academic research fellows for other reasons, like as a replacement for a parental leave or for internal projects with time limit.
These positions offer the opportunity to gain experiences in academic research and development projects. Employed are research fellows with and without doctoral degree. To which degree and in which form the advancement of a graduation is possible while working in a fixed-term employment depends on the type of the task. If a graduation is possible, an employee without doctoral degree should connect the employment relationship with the graduation possibility, as a doctoral degree is a requirement for a long-term employment in the German science system.
