Call for Abstracts: 3rd International FReDA User Conference3rd International User Conference of the German Family Demography Panel Study - FREDA, 20 & 21 October 2025 in Wiesbaden, Germany We invite submissions from national and international researchers from all disciplines using data from the German Family Demography Panel Study FReDA and/or the adjunctive German Family Panel (pairfam) and the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS). The conference will be held in English. Abstracts should be no longer than one DIN-4 page and must include the title of the presentation and the names, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all authors. Please state the data used, the research question(s), the theoretical background, the method, as well as first results. The submission deadline is 9 May 2025. GESIS Meet the Experts – New online talks on “Questionnaire design – GESIS offerings to researchers in terms of services and tools”Are you currently developing a questionnaire for a study, will you soon develop a questionnaire, or do you simply want to know more about questionnaire design or how similar questions can be harmonized across studies? We invite scholars to submit any social science papers written in German or English using ALLBUS data and published in journals or edited volumes between 2022 and 2024. The ALLBUS Award is endowed with 1,000 euros. It is awarded based on the decision of the ALLBUS Scientific Advisory Board, the ALLBUS Study Coordination Group (KG ALLBUS). The main evaluation criteria include the originality and significance of the methodological or substantive research question addressed in the paper, the quality of its theoretical foundation, and the level of the analysis.  | Sozialforschung mit dem Smartphone – Das GESIS AppKit ermöglicht mobile DatenerhebungDas GESIS AppKit, eine innovative Softwarelösung für mobile Datenerhebungen über Smartphones, ist ab sofort frei zugänglich. Es ermöglicht die Erstellung mobiler Umfragen mit komplexen, zeitbasierten Ausspielplänen und unterstützt damit die Durchführung intensiver Längsschnittstudien. Forschende können sich bequem selbst ein eigenes Konto erstellen und die vielfältigen Funktionen des GESIS AppKits nutzen, um eigene Studien zu erstellen und zu managen. Das GESIS AppKit bietet eine umfassende Infrastruktur für die mobile Datenerhebung und umfasst ein interaktives Dashboard zur Studiengestaltung und Teilnehmendenverwaltung sowie eine App für Android- und iOS-Geräte zur Befragung der Studienteilnehmenden. Dank dieser mobilen Softwarelösung wird die Durchführung intensiver Längsschnittstudien im Sinne von Ambulatory Assessment, Experience Sampling oder Ecological Momentary Assessments erleichtert. Die Nutzung des GESIS AppKits ist für nicht-kommerzielle, akademische Forschung kostenfrei. Social research with the smartphone - The GESIS AppKit enables mobile data collectionThe GESIS AppKit, an innovative software solution for mobile data collection via smartphones, is now publicly available. It enables the creation of mobile surveys with complex, time-based playout plans and thus supports the implementation of intensive longitudinal studies in the sense of Experience Sampling or Ecological Momentary Assessments. Researchers can easily create their own account and use the various functions of the GESIS AppKit to create and manage their own studies. The GESIS AppKit offers a comprehensive infrastructure for mobile data collection and includes an interactive dashboard for study design and participant management as well as an app for Android and iOS devices for interviewing study participants. The use of the GESIS AppKit is free of charge for non-commercial, academic research. To comprehensively assess the size and scope of this research field, the authors conducted a scoping review of 35 English-language reviews of primary studies on loneliness, published between 2001 and 2023.

Um diese Probleme anzugehen, brachte der zweitägige Workshop „Tools – Indicators – Metrics: Data Quality in Computational Social Science“ (11.-12. Dezember 2024) Expert*innen auf diesem Gebiet zusammen, um Möglichkeiten zur Messung, Bewertung und Verbesserung der Qualität digitaler Verhaltensdaten zu diskutieren. New post on the GESIS Blog: Peters, Shah and Weller write about the challenges of dealing with new data sourcesIn the course of datafication, social scientists are confronted with the increasing availability of digital behavioral data (DBD). Social media platforms, mobile apps, and sensors offer rich insights into human behavior, but these new data sources come with significant challenges in terms of quality. To address these issues, the two-day workshop “Tools – Indicators – Metrics: Data Quality in Computational Social Science” (December 11 -12, 2024) brought together experts in the field to discuss ways to measure, assess, and improve the quality of digital behavioral data. The workshop was organized as part of the Competence Center Data Quality in the Social Sciences (KODAQS). It combined formats for expert inputs via keynote speeches, presentations of different case studies on existing tools and workflows, and interactive breakout sessions. DOI: 10.34879/gesisblog.2025.95
