GESIS Spring Seminar 2023 on Modeling Group Differences -- Registration is open!

The GESIS Spring Seminar offers high-quality training in state-of-the-art techniques in quantitative data analysis taught by leading experts in the field. It is designed for advanced graduate or PhD students, post-docs, and junior and senior researchers. In 2023, all courses will deal with "Modeling Group Differences" in the social sciences and beyond.

Extensive hands-on exercises and tutorials complement lectures in each course. All courses are held in English. The Spring Seminar will take place on-site in Cologne from 27 February to 17 March 2023. We will move the courses online only if the pandemic hits again heavily.

This "Meet-the-Experts" series will present a range of GESIS services provided by the department “Survey Data Curation”. We will exhibit services that augment surveys by linking them with other data types or by harmonising across survey waves and countries. Topics include linking with geospatial data (a geocoder package and an application using GLES), linking with expert-coded data, an application of the cumulated ALLBUS, and the Eurobarometer and its extensions.

Virtueller KonsortSWD-Roundtable: „Diskussion sozio-demographischer Standardvariablen zur Verbesserung der Vergleichbarkeit zwischen deutschen Umfragestudien“

Sozio-demographische Variablen sind nur selten direkt über Studien hinweg vergleichbar. Dies schränkt die Interoperabilität – eines der FAIR-Prinzipien (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) – und somit die Nachnutzbarkeit der Daten ein. Das KonsortSWD-Teilprojekt „Facilitating the combination of research data through standardised and harmonised variables“, angesiedelt bei GESIS in Mannheim hat zum Ziel, Ressourcen zu erarbeiten, um diese Situation für Forschende zu verbessern.

Auf Grundlage eines Reviews zur Erhebung sozio-demographischer Merkmale in großen deutschen Umfragen und mehrerer KonsortSWD-Roundtables 2021 und 2022 haben wir für ausgewählte sozio-demographische Merkmale Vorschläge für Standardvariablen entwickelt und teilweise validiert. Diese Standardvariablen sollen einerseits die Empfehlungen der Demographischen Standards für Standarditems sinnvoll ergänzen, und andererseits der Heterogenität der tatsächlich in Umfragen eingesetzten Erhebungsinstrumente gerecht werden.

Für eine Vorstellung und Diskussion unserer Vorschläge laden wir am Donnerstag, 17.11.2022 von 13:00 bis 16:00 Uhr zum virtuellen KonsortSWD-Roundtable „Diskussion sozio-demographischer Standardvariablen zur Verbesserung der Vergleichbarkeit zwischen deutschen Umfragestudien“. Bitte melden Sie sich bis spätestens 10.11.2022 hier an und stimmen gleichzeitig darüber ab, welche Merkmale aus Ihrer Sicht auf jeden Fall vorgestellt und diskutiert werden sollen.

Im Rahmen dieser Studie wurde eine Monte Carlo Simulation durchgeführt, um den Effekt verschiedener Verteilungen auf den (Monte Carlo) Bias der Schätzung basierend auf Stichproben mit hochselektivem Inklusionsmechanismus zu evaluieren.

Das International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) hat eine Umfrage durchgeführt, die Aufschluss über Einstellungen und Meinungen zum Thema soziale Ungleichheit in 29 Ländern auf sechs Kontinenten gibt. Die Befragten wurden unter anderem zu ihren Ansichten über Einkommen, Löhne und (globale) Ungleichheit, Legitimation von Ungleichheit, soziales Vertrauen, soziale Spaltungen und Konflikte zwischen Gruppen befragt, aber auch zu ihrer subjektiven Einschätzung der eigenen sozialen Position und persönlichen Erfahrungen mit Ungleichheit.

ISSP 2019 - "Social Inequality V", doi:10.4232/1.14009

The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) has conducted a survey which sheds light on attitudes and opinions related to Social Inequality in 29 countries across six continents. Among other things, respondents were asked about their views on earnings, incomes and (global) inequality, legitimation of inequality, social trust, social cleavages, and conflict among groups; but also about their subjective assessment of their own social position and personal experiences with inequality.

Die Erhebung für die PIAAC-Studie startete im September 2022. Die PIAAC-Studie soll wichtige Anhaltspunkte für eine Verbesserung der Bildungssysteme liefern. Auf Basis der erhobenen Daten können diese an künftige Anforderungen, zum Beispiel auf dem Arbeitsmarkt, angepasst werden, damit nachfolgende Generationen erfolgreich im Leben und Beruf bestehen können.

What skills do adults use in everyday life and work? The PIAAC study is still in the field

The PIAAC study is intended to provide important pointers for improving education systems. Based on the data collected, these can be adapted to future requirements, for example on the labor market, so that subsequent generations can succeed in life and work.

The "Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies", as the PIAAC study is called in full, is organized by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). It is an international study of adult daily living skills in which 32 countries participate.

Der Datensatz bildet die schwankenden Zustimmungswerte zu Parteien, Politikerinnen und Politikern im Jahresverlauf ab. Erwartungen an die zu wählende Regierung und ihre Zusammensetzung, Kompetenzzuschreibungen für Parteien und Kanzlerkandidaten stehen diesmal besonders im Fokus.

Politbarometer polls from the 2021 federal election year - cumulative data set

The cumulative data set of Politbarometer surveys from the 2021 federal election year is available.

The dataset maps the fluctuating approval ratings for parties, politicians over the course of the year. Expectations of the government to be elected and its composition, attributions of competence to parties and candidates for chancellor are particularly in focus this time.

In addition to surveying the biggest problems in Germany, the survey asks opinions and attitudes on numerous current issues.
