Content of Module Pages
On the ISSP module pages various context-information on ISSP data sets are provided. Apart from data set specific links to the data catalogue, module specific documents, such as the British English ISSP source questionnaire; Codebooks/ Variable Reports; Study Monitoring Reports, a report on the questionnaire development and an overview of variables, questions and replications in each ISSP modules are available.
Additionally, a table provides information on participating countries for the specific module, their sample sizes and fieldwork times as well as access to national fieldwork questionnaires and documentation forms on ISSP background variables (from 2004 onwards). The news section on each module pages gives information on recent data updates. Access to the module pages is available by Topic, by Module Year, or for cumulated modules via the Data Cumulation.
To get an overview on ISSP member-countries participating in the various ISSP modules, you can download an
Excel file (ISSP Countries' Participation.xlsx) (401 kB)
including two comprehensive tables with information on countries’ participation, corresponding sample sizes, and years of fieldwork. If available, the table also provides the information whether the ISSP survey has been administered together with a national survey. Whereas the first table includes countries that are already integrated in the international ISSP data files, the countries in the second table are not (yet) integrated for various reasons.
Since both tables can be filtered, you are free to adjust them according to your own needs.
Here are three examples for a better understanding:
To gain information about the participating countries of a special module, filter the column 'Module' by means of the small arrow visible in the Excel file by a certain ISSP module, such as 'Role of Government I' and you achieve the following results (extract):
Country | Year | Module | Sample size | Year of fieldwork |
Australia | 1985 | Role of Government I | 1528 | 1986/1987 |
Austria | 1985 | Role of Government I | 987 | 1986 |
Germany | 1985 | Role of Government I | 1048 (West) | 1985 |
Great Britain | 1985 | Role of Government I | 1530 | 1985 |
Italy | 1985 | Role of Government I | 1580 | 1985 |
United States of America | 1985 | Role of Government I | 677 | 1985 |
If you are interested in which modules a particular country has participated, filter the column 'Country' by choosing a country, such as 'Australia' and the table will look like this (extract):
Country | Year | Module | Sample size | Year of fieldwork |
Australia | 1985 | Role of Government I | 1528 | 1986/1987 |
Australia | 1986 | Social Networks I | 1250 | 1987 |
Australia | 1987 | Social Inequality I | 1663 | 1987/1988 |
Australia | 1988 | Family and Changing Gender Roles I | 4513 | 1989/1990 |
Australia | 1990 | Role of Government II | 2398 | 1990 |
Australia | 1991 | Religion I | 2203 | 1993 |
To find out whether a country has participated in a particular module and its replications, filter the two columns 'Country' and 'Module' (extract):
Country | Year | Module | Sample size | Year of fieldwork |
Australia | 1985 | Role of Government I | 1528 | 1986/1987 |
Australia | 1990 | Role of Government II | 2398 | 1990 |
Australia | 1996 | Role of Government III | 2151 | 1996 |
Australia | 2006 | Role of Government IV | 2781 | 2007 |
