Aufbau und Gestaltung einer Forschungsdateninfrastruktur für die Bildungsforschung – Teilprojekt GESIS

Abstract

In the collaborative project German Network for Educational Research Data (GNERD), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF), the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB) and GESIS work together to build and extend a sustainable research data infrastructure for empirical educational research. This network provides services of data archiving and dissemination (1), builds a central reference system (2) and supports researchers by offering trainings and advice on research data management (3).

(1) The three institutes GESIS, DIPF and IQB archive and prepare research data for reuse. To cope with the great diversity of empirical educational research, the services of other relevant research data centers and research institutes will be integrated in the network’s existing offer. Therefore, various forms of cooperation are planned that take into account the different starting positions and capabilities of the respective data center.

(2) Visibility and findability are crucial for the preservation and reuse of research data. For this purpose, GNERD expands documentation of studies and research data on the web portal www.forschungsdaten-bildung.de. Research data that is archived and provided by different research data centers, are thus findable and accessible regardless of their location of storage via this web portal. Furthermore, GNERD creates an additional benefit through linking research data with their related publications. An important prerequisite for this centralized data reference system is the harmonization of descriptive metadata and the development of standards and best practices for the description and indexing of research data. This is developed in cooperation with further research data centers with a link to empirical educational research.

(3) Researchers are supported with diverse training-, information- and consulting services to produce high quality and reusable research data. The annual two-day workshop “Research data management for empirical educational sciences”, which was introduced in the preliminary funding phase, will be enhanced continuously to meet researchers’ demands. To increase the reach of the qualification services, the current training program will be complemented by webinars, accompanied by an online discussion forum, and a vocational training for multipliers (“Train-The-Trainer”). To establish the cross-sectional topic of research data management as part of the basic qualification of young researchers, expert associations, graduate and summer schools will be encouraged to consider the integration of training modules in their training programs.

The project’s second funding phase started in October 2016. It succeeds the project “Backup and reuse of research data of the framework program for advancement of empirical educational sciences” (duration: October 2013-2016).
