centre for qualitative social and evaluation research (ces)

The interdisciplinary centre for qualitative social and evaluation research (ces) was founded in 2005 by a group of scientists both from the area of social and educational research. Aim of this network is the cultivation and promotion of science and research as well as providing training in the area of qualitative social, educational and evaluation research. For many years, the members of the centre have worked in (university based and extramural) research, following the principle of ‘making implicit knowledge explicit’. The underlying basic assumption is, that people do not only act on the basis of their theoretical or professional knowledge, but that their behaviour is substantially caused by a practical or embodied knowledge, acquired on the basis of their experiences. To make this mostly implicit or ,tacit’ knowledge accessible is the central potential of the Documentary Method of Interpretation, which is the common point of reference of research activities carried out by the members of ces.

COMCAD (Center on Migration, Citizenship and Development) at the University of Bielefeld

At the core of the activities stand the social mechanisms which contribute to the genesis and reproduction of social practices and structures beyond the borders of national states. We specifically deal with the implications for social inequalities on membership, such as citizenship. We differentiate between transnationalization as cross-border processes, transnational social spaces as cross-border formations, and transnationality as a heterogeneity which characterizes cross-border relations. Also, we seek to understand the nexus between research, politics and the public sphere. Our agenda encompasses three areas of research: cross-border migration, recursive diffusion processes between research, politics and the public sphere, and the transnational social question, that is the politics of social inequalities encompassing both global North and global South. In all three fields our research is concerned with how categories of persons, organizations and states build social formations in the form of transnational social spaces which cut across national borders, such as diasporas, transnational communities, transnational families, transnational social movements, issue networks of organizations - and the consequences of transnational social formations for life worlds, social inequalities and membership. How does knowledge about these processes diffuse back and forth between research, politics and the public? The work of the Center on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD) seeks to develop and employ methods adequate to capture transnational relations and their implications. An important part of the working group's activities in research training are third-party funded projects and doctoral dissertations which reflect the research fields of transnational migration, development cooperation, climate change, transnational social policy and transnational social protection.

Leibniz-Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI)

The research perspective of the Leibniz-Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut in Hamburg focuses on media transformation and related structural changes of public communication regardless of the technical platforms on which it takes place.  The institute investigates how certain forms of media-based communication help shape areas of life such as politics, economics, culture, education, law, religion and family and contribute to structural transformations. The problem orientation of the research is accompanied by a special interest in the respective "new" media, to whose understanding and shaping the Institute wants to contribute. With its cross-medial, interdisciplinary and independent research, it combines basic research and transfer research, and thus, generates knowledge on issues relevant for politics, commerce and civil society.

Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL)

The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in Leipzig is tasked with visualising social change and preparing information about sustainable and regionally balanced development concepts. As a member of the Leibniz Association and as the only non-university research institute for geography in Germany, the institute brings together basic research and knowledge transfer. With its approximately 100 members of staff, the institute conducts research on current spatial developments in Germany and Europe, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe. Within the “Historical Geographies” research area, the IfL reconstructs the evolution of new methods and systems of thought in geography. For that, the Archive for Geography at the IfL and the Central Geographical Library are important research infrastructures. In order to convey the results of his research, the IfL is purposefully using cartographic illustrations. The Institute is continually developing the high technical standard of his map production. And, as a society and as researchers, it is thinking about how, in an age of progressive digitisation, we will present, exchange or share geographic information by means of maps in the future.

Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS)

Research at the IRS is focused on the spatial aspects and contexts of social action. In doing so, spatial phenomena are explored in terms of both processual and historical dimensions using social-scientific methods. The research focuses on the preconditions, interactions, and consequences of spatial development, and how involved actors contribute to these developments by sharing insights and cooperating on processes of innovation. For instance, the IRS examines how the exchange of knowledge between academics and spatial planners facilitates the emergence of new approaches to spatial planning. The IRS conducts both basic and applied research and promotes the transfer of scientific insights to practitioners throughout society. Research on society and space at the IRS builds on interdisciplinary expertise from the fields of economic and social geography, political science, sociology, planning science, historical studies as well as the history of arts and architecture. IRS scholars integrate these different academic traditions by utilizing them in their research on space. With its research, the IRS makes a significant contribution to understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with space. It also sheds light on the ability of different spaces to transform and adapt to different regional, national and international contexts. Examples include innovations as drivers of knowledge-based economies, changes to infrastructural networks and new types of housing, as well as novel ways of living in and engaging with cities. It also encompasses changed patterns and dimensions of global migration.

Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO)

The Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin conducts research into the history and society of Islamic regions of the world. The focus is on interdependent regions in the Middle East, Africa, Central, South and Southeast Asia, as well as Europe (including South-South and South-North relations). In the current phase of globalisation, historical understanding of these connections is vitally important. For this reason, researchers from various disciplinary perspectives examine cultural, social, political, and economic processes since the 18th century. ZMO also conducts research on the production of knowledge about Muslim societies. Collaboration between history, Islamic studies, and ethnology, as well as political science, literary and cultural studies, linguistics and other disciplines, opens the borders traditionally separating regional and disciplinary fields of knowledge. ZMO researchers draw on archival work and empirically substantiated studies based on a broad range of languages, sources, and regional knowledge. The Centre also cooperates closely with researchers from the regions and promotes exchange between science and other forms of knowledge production. The ZMO's basic research contributes to a deeper understanding of current problems. Through a wide range of public formats for knowledge transfer, the Centre strives for a broad social impact with its research. Moreover, research results are shared and discussed in the regions under study at ZMO. Thus, ZMO contributes to a close connection between theory and practice as well as a differentiated view of Muslim worlds.

pairfam („Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics“)

The 2008-launched German Family Panel pairfam (“Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics”) is a multi-disciplinary, longitudinal study for researching partnership and family dynamics in Germany. The annually collected survey data from a nationwide random sample of more than 12,000 persons of the three birth cohorts 1971-73, 1981-83, 1991-93 and their partners, parents and children offers unique opportunities for the analysis of partner and generational relationships as they develop over the course of multiple life phases. The focus of pairfam is on the complex processes of partnership formation and development, starting and expanding a family, parenting and child development, and intergenerational relationships. Particular attention is paid to the social embeddedness of these processes. In addition, the comprehensive survey also touches on various issues from other life domains. The German Family Panel is a cooperative effort linking the University of Bremen, the Chemnitz University of Technology, the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, the University of Cologne, and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Since 2010, pairfam has been funded as long-term project by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is accredited as a research data center by the German Data Forum (RatSWD).

Research Institute for Societal Development

The Research Institute for Societal Development, in German Forschungsinstitut für gesellschaftliche Weiterentwicklung (FGW), aimed at the development of knowledge- and experience-based design options to strengthen the social and political cohesion of modern societies. In times of complex social, political and economical developments, the FGW wanted to provide impulses for social development in the sense of a pluralized and at the same time socially integrated society. The FGW therefore took up relevant topics via dialogue-oriented formats and worked on them with the involvement of the respective stakeholder from civil society, politics, administration and science. One result of this process were topic-specific research agendas, calls for projects and transfer formats, which focused on mechanisms of social disintegration and options for ensuring social participation. From a broad social science perspective, the FGW's thematic areas were (1) the consequences and shapeability of the ongoing digitalisation of the world of work (Digitalisation of Work); (2) the socio-spatial conditions of integration opportunities and disintegration risks in cities and municipalities (Integrative Urban Development); (3) the possibilities for integrating pluralistic perspectives and socially relevant issues in economic science and education (New Economic Thinking); (4) the opportunities and challenges of a preventive and future-oriented social policy (Preventive Social Policy); (5) the social state of a democracy in which increasingly right-wing populist groups provide answers to social questions (Right-wing Populism, Social Question and Democracy).

Soziopolis

Soziopolis is a sociological online portal that shows different ways of observing societies in order to create a discussion between them. Besides reviews of relevant German and foreign language new releases, survey articles, comments and essays, Soziopolis regularly publishes reports on lectures, meetings and conferences that focus on historical social sciences and cultural studies.

Soziopolis is a project of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research [in cooperation with H-Soz-Kult under the roof of Clio-Online e.V.]. The main editorial office, located in Hamburg, is supported by about 40 specialist editors who assist on a voluntary basis. A scientific advisory board and an international network of various cooperation partners, which include the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne and the Institute for Social Research / Frankfurt am Main, have also been set up.

Founded in 1984, the Hamburg Institute for Social Research (HIS), as a non-university institution, has from the very beginning been committed to analyzing socio-politically relevant topics in a theoretically ambitious and historically informed way, in order to make visible issues that have received little attention in conventional academic research. Currently, four research groups are established at the Institute, which in a predominantly macro-sociological and macro-historical perspective concentrate on phenomena that are dealt with in subdisciplines such as legal sociology, political sociology (with a particular focus on problems of statehood and democracy), the sociology of money and the sociology of violence. A publicly accessible library and a large archive with a collection focus on “Violence and Protest” are further features of the Institute’s academic infrastructure.

However, with its research results the HIS does not only contribute to the inner-scientific debate. Via the in-house journal Mittelweg 36 and the publishing house Hamburger Edition, these results are edited and published in such a way that the politically interested public is also addressed.

We offer more than 100 series and release about 400 new German- and English-language titles every year. Our backlist catalogue includes more than 4,000 titles in print and digital formats. This commitment has formed our unique and broad yet well-balanced program, which contributes high-quality publications to the latest debates in various academic disciplines. Along with classical scholarly formats we also publish stimulating essays that find significant audiences beyond the academic sphere. From the outset, one of our main aims has been to give innovative content an unmistakable look – a maxim of which our design team has never lost sight. This investment distinguishes us from most other publishers in the field is both a gesture of respect to our authors and their projects and part of our commitment to make every single new release special and unique. We believe that academic Open Access publishing is more than processing data and filling archives. All of our e-books and their individual chapters are assigned unique DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) and benefit from rich bibliographical metadata, making them easy to cite in a clear and unambiguous way, and improving their findability on the internet. One of our greatest strengths is our commitment to an independent publishing culture free from any interference by corporate interests. Thanks to our London office and our wide range of international partner presses, such as Columbia University Press in North America, our international program continues to grow year by year.

Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO)
