The major goals of the proposed “Leibniz Jacobs College for Interdisciplinary Education Research” (hereafter: Leibniz Jacobs College or LJC) are (a) to promote the early independence of excellent young researchers who recently completed their PhDs, and (b) to foster interdisciplinary education research in a life course perspective. Researchers from six Leibniz Institutes and colleagues from universities (located at the same cities) will work together to support a group of selected postdoctoral scholars. Activities of support will include (a) interdisciplinary discussions on educational processes over the life course, (b) interdisciplinary workshops on theories and methods (including methodology) of key subdisciplines in education research, and (c) funding of interdisciplinary projects developed independently by the young researchers themselves and carried out in cooperation with colleagues from other disciplines within the LJC. The projects will contribute to our knowledge in three research areas: (a) educational inequality and success against the odds, (b) competence development as an educational and social process, and (c) returns to education.

Long-term aims of the LJC are: (a) promotion and improvement of interdisciplinary education research of young researchers at the postdoctoral level, (b) joint research activities among participating (senior and junior) researchers, and (c) the establishment of an interdisciplinary education research network of researchers working at Leibniz Institutes and universities.

To further promote postdoctoral scholars’ early involvement in international education research networks, the LJC will support research visits abroad, organize international workshops and conferences, and invite internationally distinguished scholars in the field of education research for research visits and LJC workshops/conferences. These activities will not only support international network-building, but will also promote a comparative research perspective and the projects of the LJC postdoctoral scholars. Young researchers will be recruited internationally; the working language in the LJC will be English.

The LJC would thereby make an innovative contribution to interdisciplinary research in multiple respects. First, as a postdoctoral-level program (lasting three years, beginning with advanced doctoral fellows in the first year), it uniquely combines efforts to promote young researchers’ early independence with advanced theoretical and methodological training. Second, it aims at building sustainable structures of interdisciplinary collaboration, reinforced by the fact that young researchers and (due to their active participation in the LJC) also senior researchers are encouraged to acquire solid knowledge and competencies in more than one discipline – competencies that are seen as a prerequisite for fruitful interdisciplinary collaborations and advances in knowledge. Third, the LJC not only combines perspectives from education, psychology, and sociology; it also draws on theories and methods of economics and that discipline’s emphasis on investments into and returns to education. In turn, the LJC will also contribute to a more productive use of psychological and sociological concepts in economic research on education and the labor market. Finally, the active participation of “established” researchers from the various disciplines in the activities of the LJC will provide an outstanding setting for developing new and innovative research ideas in the field of interdisciplinary education research, as well as for building a sustainable research network.
