GESIS untersucht die interkulturelle Vergleichbarkeit der Methoden und Instrumente innerhalb der drei Bereiche Survey Statistics, Survey Instruments und Survey Operations. Forschung und Entwicklung im Bereich der komparativen Umfrageforschung wird auch im Rahmen internationaler Forschungsverbünde betrieben, vor allem im European Social Survey, im International Social Survey Programme und seinen Arbeitsgruppen zu Methoden und Fragebogenentwicklung sowie in PIAAC.
