Studium der Soziologie (Dipl.-Soz., Dr. rer.pol., Uni München). Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter Uni München (1984-1986). Leiter der Abteilung ALLBUS bei ZUMA (1986-1995). Gastprofessur an der University of Chicago (1988-1989). Habilitationsschrift "Funktionale Äquivalenz in international vergleichenden Umfragen. Mythos und Realität". Seit 1995 Projektberater bei GESIS, seit 2007 apl. Professor an der Universität Mannheim.
