GESIS Fall Seminar in Computational Social Science 2022 – Registration is open! The Fall Seminar will take place from 5 to 23 September 2022 at GESIS in Mannheim. Week 1 (5-9 September) comprises courses on the foundations of working with digital behavioral data. Courses in Week 2 (12-16 September) focus on the collection and management of big data, and courses in Week 3 (19-23 September) cover different techniques for analyzing these data. The seminar targets social scientists, data scientists, and researchers in the digital humanities that want to collect and analyze data from the web, social media, or digital text archives. Successful International PIAAC Research Conference 2022 The virtual International PIAAC Research Conference 2022, held on March 24 and 25, was a resounding success. 155 active participants joined a virtual event platform to follow the diverse program. Six symposia and eight paper sessions were spread over the two days of the event and focused on topics such as „Cognitive skills and lifelong learning“, „Determinants of cognitive skills“ or „Skill use and skill mismatch“. The program was rounded off by two keynotes by Dr. Irwin Kirsch ("Enhancing the Utility of International Large-Scale Assessments") and Prof. Dr. Rolf van der Velden ("This Is A Skills World"), both of which are also available as so-called "graphic recordings". New publication - L. Constantin Wurthmann: Black–Blue or Bahamas? Will the Alternative for Germany (AfD) soon be actively involved in forming Germany’s governments? The findings of this article illustrate that the established German parties would be well advised not to form a coalition involving the AfD as their own voters strongly oppose it. Allerdings ist das Verständnis für die unterschiedlichen Mobilitätsmuster von Wissenschaftler*innen mit verschiedenen soziodemografischen Merkmalen noch sehr begrenzt. However, there is still a very limited understanding of the different mobility patterns among scholars with various socio-demographic characteristics. New innovative study by Lechner, Silber, Gummer et al.: River Sampling – a Fishing Expedition The ease with which large amounts of data can be collected via the Internet has led to a renewed interest in the use of non-probability samples. To that end, this paper performs a case study, comparing two non-probability datasets – one based on a river-sampling approach, one drawn from an online-access panel – to a reference probability sample. Of particular interest is the single-question river-sampling approach, as the data collected for this study presents an attempt to field a multi-item scale with such a sampling method.
