Extended deadline for submitting abstracts - Online-Workshop “Tools – Indicators – Metrics: Data Quality in Computational Social Science”

A two-day online workshop with sessions focused on tools, indicators, and metrics for assessing the quality of digital behavioral data.

We welcome submissions of abstracts (300 words) that provide an overview of the tool, indicator or methodology, its application, and the insights gained. We also invite work in progress.

Submission Deadline: November 10, 2024
Notification of Acceptance: November 15, 2024

Please submit your abstracts to yannik.peters@gesis.org as a PDF document by the deadline mentioned above. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the workshop's scientific committee.

Die Autor*innen führe ein Modell für Netzwerkwachstum und -übernahme ein, in dem verallgemeinerte bevorzugte Bindung und asymmetrische Mischung als die beiden grundlegenden Mechanismen für Wachstum und Übernahme fungieren. Sie zeigen analytisch und numerisch, dass diese Mechanismen die empirischen Eigenschaften des Zitier- und Kollaborationswachstums sowie die in der Wachstumsdynamik von Gruppen beobachteten Ungleichheiten wiederherstellen können.

The authors introduce a network growth and adoption model where generalised preferential attachment and asymmetric mixing act as the two fundamental mechanisms of growth and adoption. They show analytically and numerically that these mechanisms can recover the empirical properties of citation and collaboration growth, as well as the inequalities observed in the growth dynamics of groups.

Eine neue gemeinsame Studie von Dr. Andrea Löther (CEWS) und ihrer ehemaligen Kollegin Frederike Freud untersucht, wie sich geschlechtsspezifische Homophilie – die Neigung zu sozialen Kontakten mit Personen gleichen Geschlechts – auf internationale Forschungspartnerschaften auswirkt. Sie stellen eine geschlechtsspezifische Homophilie fest, auch wenn das Geschlechterverhältnis unter den für die Förderung berechtigten Wissenschaftler*innen berücksichtigt wird. Männer neigen eher zu geschlechtshomophilen Kooperationen als Frauen.

A new collaborative study from Dr. Andrea Löther (CEWS) and her former colleague Frederike Freud examines how gender homophily—where researchers tend to collaborate with others of the same gender—affects international research partnerships. They detect gender homophily, even when considering the gender balance of researchers eligible for funding. Furthermore, men are more likely to form gender-homophilous collaborations than women.

Das Forschungsprojekt „OASE – Open-Access-Effekte“ untersuchte die Auswirkungen von Open Access auf den wissenschaftlichen Impact in verschiedenen Disziplinen. Es zeigte, dass Open Access, insbesondere Preprints, die Sichtbarkeit erhöht, das Publikationsverhalten jedoch stark von disziplinären Normen geprägt bleibt.

The research project "OASE – Open-Access Effects" studied the impact of Open Access on scientific influence across disciplines. It found that Open Access, especially preprints, boosts visibility, but publishing behavior remains largely shaped by disciplinary norms.

Die Daten bieten großartige Möglichkeiten zur Beobachtung des sozialen Wandels und zur Vertiefung des Verständnisses heutiger Gesellschaften, indem sie die Einstellungen der Befragten und ihre Erfahrungen mit Themen wie Beschäftigungsregelungen, Vereinbarkeit von Beruf und Familie oder Solidarität und Konflikte in Arbeitsbeziehungen untersuchen.

The data offer great opportunities for monitoring social change and deepening the understanding of contemporary societies by looking at respondents’ attitudes on and experiences with issues such as employment arrangements, work-life balance, or solidarity and conflict in work relations.

Maßnahmen für geschlechtergerechte Berufungen im Instrumentenkasten – CEWS unterstützt die Hochschulen bei der Umsetzung der HRK-Selbstverpflichtung

Gemeinsam mit der HRK hat das CEWS den Instrumentenkasten (INKA) überarbeitet und das neue Handlungsfeld „Berufungsverfahren“ eingerichtet.

Hintergrund ist die Im Mai 2024 von der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) in ihrer Mitgliederversammlung verabschiedete Selbstverpflichtung „Auf dem Weg zu mehr Geschlechtergerechtigkeit bei Berufungen“. Der Beschluss benennt konkrete Ziele und Handlungsfelder sowie Maßnahmen, die zu mehr Geschlechtergerechtigkeit an Hochschulen beitragen können. Als Begleitmaßnahme der Selbstverpflichtung haben sich die Signatarhochschulen bereit erklärt, die ihrerseits institutionell etablierten Instrumente in den INKA, die Datenbank des CEWS zu Gleichstellungsmaßnahmen von deutschen Wissenschaftseinrichtungen, einzutragen.

Measures for more gender equality in appointment procedures in the INKA toolbox - CEWS supports higher education institutions in implementing the HRK's voluntary commitment

Together with the German Rectors' Conference (German abbreviation: HRK), CEWS has revised its toolbox INKA and set up the new field of action “Appointment procedures”.

The background to this is the voluntary commitment towards more gender equality in appointment procedures adopted by the HRK at its General Assembly in May 2024. The resolution specifies concrete goals and areas of action as well as measures that can contribute to greater gender equality at higher education institutions. As an accompanying measure to the voluntary commitment, the signatory higher education institutions have agreed to enter their institutionally established instruments in INKA, the CEWS database on gender equality measures in German academia.
