Liebe Leser*innen,

die letzte Ausgabe des Newsletters kurz vor Weihnachten beschließt das Jahr 2024. Das gibt uns Gelegenheit, sowohl zurück- als auch vorauszublicken.

Am 10. Dezember wurden - unter großer Resonanz bundesweiter Medien - die Ergebnisse von PIAAC 2023 veröffentlicht. Die von der Organisation für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (OECD) koordinierte und in Deutschland von GESIS geleitete Studie wurde im Jahr 2023 nach zehn Jahren zum zweiten Mal durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse stehen nun frei zur Verfügung.

Lassen wir den Blick ins kommende Jahr schweifen, dann grüßt im Februar bereits die vorgezogene Neuwahl des Bundestages. Mit der GLES hat GESIS die etablierte und renommierte deutsche Wahlstudie im Haus, deren Mitarbeitende trotz der ungeplanten Vorverlegung der Wahl gut vorbereitet in den heißen Wahlfrühling starten. Wir werden über entsprechende Aktivitäten weiterhin berichten. Stay tuned!

Dear readers,

the last issue of the newsletter just before Christmas concludes the year 2024. This gives us the opportunity to look back as well as ahead.

On December 10, the results of PIAAC 2023 were published, attracting widespread media coverage nationwide. The study, coordinated by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and led by GESIS in Germany, was conducted for the second time in 2023 after ten years. The results are now freely available.

Looking ahead to the coming year, the early re-election of the Bundestag (German parliament) in February is already on the horizon. With the GLES, GESIS has the established and renowned German election study in-house, whose staff are well prepared to start the hot spring of elections despite the unplanned bringing forward of the election. We will continue to report on relevant activities. Stay tuned!

We wish all our readers a peaceful Christmas, a happy and reflective holiday season and a happy and healthy start to 2025!

#CfP Call for Papers: Special Issue "Perceptions of Wealth Inequality"

Call for papers for a special issue in Historical Social Research, edited by Daniel Mayerhoffer (University of Amsterdam), Jan Schulz (University of Bamberg) and Daria Tisch (MPIfG Cologne)

The special issue seeks to consolidate diverse methodological and theoretical approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of how perceptions of economic inequality, with a particular focus on wealth disparities, are formed, maintained, and challenged. By offering insights into the mechanisms driving these perceptions, we aim to better understand their role in shaping individual behaviour and collective policy decisions.

10 minutes survey time for your study

On the occasion of its 10^th anniversary, the GESIS Panel invites you to a unique call: 10 minutes survey time in the GESIS Panel.pop for the 10^th anniversary!

The GESIS Panel.pop Population Sample is a mixed-mode panel based on random survey samples of the adult German-speaking population of Germany and thus allows drawing conclusions about the general population. About 5,000 respondents are interviewed four times a year, either web-based or via paper questionnaires. After 10 years of regular data collection with the GESIS Panel.pop, a thematically diverse data set with cross-sectional and longitudinal survey modules has been created (including the GESIS Panel.pop longitudinal Core Studies). All researchers have access to the entire GESIS Panel.pop data (53 survey waves to date), containing relevant variables for sociology, psychology, political science, economics, and other disciplines.

Researchers can submit survey questions via Regular Submissions or Short Submissions for their research for data collection free of charge - however, survey slots are limited to a maximum duration of five minutes.

To celebrate its 10^th anniversary, the GESIS Panel.pop offers one survey slot of 10 minutes survey time (maximum of 50 survey questions/items).

GESIS Spring Seminar 2025 – Experimental Designs in the Social and Behavioral Sciences – Still Places Available!

The Spring Seminar offers high-quality training in state-of-the-art techniques in quantitative data analysis taught by leading experts in the field. It is designed for advanced graduate or PhD students, post-docs, as well as junior and senior researchers. In 2025, all courses will deal with "Experimental Designs in the Social and Behavioral Sciences".

Extensive hands-on exercises and tutorials complement lectures in each course. The Spring Seminar will take place onsite at GESIS Cologne, Germany, from 17 March to 04 April 2025.

OECD-Studie PIAAC veröffentlicht erste Ergebnisse

Die Grundkompetenzen der Erwachsenen in Deutschland liegen über dem internationalen Durchschnitt der rund 30 Teilnehmerländer und sind im Vergleich zu vor zehn Jahren stabil geblieben. Innerhalb der Bevölkerung gibt es teilweise jedoch starke systematische Unterschiede in den Kompetenzen, zeigt das Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies, PIAAC 2023.

OECD study PIAAC publishes first results

The basic skills of adults in Germany are above the international average of the approximately 30 participating countries and have remained stable compared to ten years ago. However, the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies, PIAAC 2023, shows that there are sometimes strong systematic differences in skills within the population.

Für die vorgezogene Bundestagswahl 2025 ist die GLES gut vorbereitet. Die GLES Kandidierendenstudie Europawahl 2024 (ZA7960) enthält Interviews mit 200 Kandidierenden der vor der Europawahl 2024 im Bundestag oder im Europäischen Parlament vertretenen deutschen Parteien. Die Befragung, zu der alle Kandidierenden dieser Parteien eingeladen waren, wurde im Zeitraum von 10.06.2024 bis 25.09.2024 mittels online Interviews (CAWI) durchgeführt.

Data Release: GLES Candidate Study European Election 2024 Version 1.0.0 is available

The GLES Candidate Study European Election 2024 (ZA7960) contains interviews with 200 candidates of the German parties represented in the Bundestag or the European Parliament before the 2024 European elections. The survey, to which all candidates of these parties were invited, was conducted by means of online interviews (CAWI) in the period from June 10, 2024 to September 25, 2024.

Neuer Blog-Beitrag: Oliver Watteler & Luisa Golland schreiben über Bemühungen, die Datennutzung in den Sozialwissenschaften transparenter zu gestalten

Die Replikationskrise in vielen Disziplinen, die Anfang der 2000er Jahre begann, machte einen Mangel an Transparenz deutlich und führte zu Forderungen nach „offener Wissenschaft“ und Datenverfügbarkeit für Replikationen. Der Text befasst sich mit den Richtlinien für die gemeinsame Nutzung von Daten durch Zeitschriften und Verlage, die darauf abzielen, die Datennutzung in den Sozialwissenschaften transparenter zu gestalten. Er präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer empirischen Überprüfung solcher Richtlinien und kommt zu dem Schluss, dass Autor*innen in den meisten Fällen nur die Verfügbarkeit ihrer Daten nachweisen müssen. Ein Beispiel für eine korrekte Datenangabe ist ebenfalls enthalten.

New blog post: Oliver Watteler & Luisa Golland write about efforts making data usage in the social sciences more transparent

The replication crisis in many disciplines beginning in the early 2000s highlighted a lack of transparency and led to calls for “open science” and data availability for replication. The text discusses journals’ and publishers’ data sharing policies, which aim at making data usage in the social sciences more transparent. It presents the results of an empirical check of such policies and comes to the conclusion that in most cases authors only need to provide proof of the availability of their data. An example of a proper data citation is also included.

Das 1%-Zufallsstichproben-Twitter-Archiv, das bei GESIS gehostet wird, umfasst jetzt mehr als 14 Milliarden Tweets in mehr als 80 Sprachen, die über einen Zeitraum von mehr als zehn Jahren gesammelt wurden – bis zur Schließung der öffentlichen Twitter-API im Juni 2023.

Acknowledgments in scientific papers may give an insight into aspects of the scientific community, such as reward systems, collaboration patterns, and hidden research trends. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the performance of different embedding models for the task of automatic extraction and classification of acknowledged entities from the acknowledgment text in scientific papers.

Die neue thematische Datensammlung „Gender und Diversity“ enthält eine umfassende Auswahl an Studien zu diesem breiten Forschungsfeld. Die Studien befassen sich mit verschiedenen Themen wie Geschlechtsidentität und Sexualität sowie Geschlechterrollen in Familie, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft. Die enthaltenen Studien decken einen großen Erhebungszeitraum ab und sind sowohl national als auch international ausgerichtet.

Data Spotlight #5 on the GESIS Blog: Dr. Alexander Jedinger and Felix Bürgel presenting a curated collection of data on gender and diversity

The new thematic data collection, “Gender and Diversity,” contains a comprehensive selection of studies in this broad field of research. The studies address several topics, such as gender identity and sexuality, as well as gender roles in family, economy, and society. The studies included cover a large survey period and are both national and international in scope.

INSPIRE Deliverable 3.3: Bericht über die Umfrage zur Überwachung des Gleichstellungsplans + Web-Scraping Ergebnis

Seit 2022 müssen Forschungseinrichtungen und Hochschulen, die EU-Fördermittel beantragen, um antragsberechtigt zu sein, etwas nachweisen: einen Gleichstellungsplan (Englisch: gender equality plan GEP). Ein zuverlässiges Instrument zur Überwachung dieser Pläne fehlt jedoch bislang.

Der aktuelle Bericht des CEWS-Teams im Rahmen des INSPIRE-Projekts widmet sich dieser Lücke.

INSPIRE Deliverable 3.3: Report on GEP Monitoring Survey + Webcrawl Result

Since 2022, research organisations and higher education institutions applying for EU funding in the Horizon Europe Framework must meet a key eligibility criterion: the implementation of a Gender Equality Plan (GEP). However, a reliable tool for monitoring these plans is currently lacking.

The latest report by the CEWS team, developed as part of the EU funded INSPIRE project, addresses this gap.

CSES startet Modul 6 mit Vorabveröffentlichung

Das Thema von Modul 6 lautet „Repräsentative Demokratie unter Druck“. Das Hauptziel besteht darin, die Einschätzungen der Bürger*innen zur Funktionsweise des demokratischen Systems und seiner Leistungen, die Einstellung der Befragten zur Geschlechtervertretung und zu repräsentativen demokratischen Verfahren, die Einstellung der Befragten zu alternativen Regierungspräferenzen und die Auswirkungen der COVID-19-Pandemie auf die Demokratie zu erfassen.

Trailblazing Ahead: CSES launches Module 6 with Advance Release 1

The topic of Module 6 is "Representative Democracy Under Pressure." The main goal is to capture citizens' assessments of the functioning of the democratic system and perceptions on system outputs, respondent attitudes to gender representation and representative democratic procedures, respondent attitudes to alternative government preferences, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on democracy.
