Workshop: PIAAC and PIAAC-L in Applied Research

PIAAC and PIAAC-L in Applied Research

Dozentin: Katharina Hartinger (JGU Mainz)

Datum: 27. bis 28. Oktober 2022 (Zeit: 10 - 18 Uhr)

Ort: GESIS Mannheim

Abstract:

This workshop provides practical guidance for researchers who plan to work with PIAAC and / or PIAAC-L data in applied research. We will discuss key advantages and potentials of these data sets as well as important aspects to consider when working with the data in practice. In hands-on Stata exercises, we will manage and merge PIAAC(-L) data and run first analyses. Participants are encouraged to present own research ideas involving PIAAC(-L) data and receive feedback from the group. There will also be an opportunity to actively work on these ideas during the workshop.

PIAAC, the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies, is an international skills test (numeracy, literacy, and problem solving in technology-rich environments) administered by the OECD with an extensive background questionnaire on job, education, and skill use aspects. For Germany, PIAAC-Longitudinal (3 waves: 2014, 2015, 2016) is available. PIAAC-L participants underwent repeated skills tests (PIAAC & NEPS instruments) and background surveys (including but not limited to their biography, education, career, personality, and attitudes), with additional data available at the household level (including but not limited to household resources, income, and composition).

The tutorial sections are based on Stata. Participants are free to use alternative software (i.e., R) but all instructions and explanations will be targeted explicitly towards Stata users. Participants are expected to bring a laptop (a limited number are available) and to apply for access to the PIAAC-L data and download it ahead of the workshop.

To apply for the workshop, please send a short sketch (approximately 5 sentences) of a PIAAC(-L)-based research idea (early-stage ideas are welcome) and your CV to the PIAAC Research Data Center (fdz-piaac(at)gesis(dot)org) by October 15, 2022. There will be no participation fees. The workshops will be limited to a maximum of 12 participants.
