What do “the People” want? Online Populism in Europe and the US

First wave of online survey scheduled for March, 2019.

While social media enables us to study populist grievances and how they can lead to the formation of counter-publics, social media conversations are primarily driven by those strata of the population with above average levels of political interest and specific sociodemographic characteristics. Therefore, we also use online panels available in most of our target countries that include an innovative combination of survey data and web tracking data linked at the individual level.

The panels are weighted so that they resemble the respective online population. This setup allows us to survey people multiple times (pre- and post-surveys) regarding their socio-demographics, authoritarian values, and political preferences or voting behaviour. For the measurement of demographic and political variables, we can take pre-tested and validated survey items from the data catalogues at GESIS.
