“She Wasn’t Resisting”: Students’ Barriers to Prosocial Intervention as Bystanders to Sexual Assault Risk Situations

Inhalt: The White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault recommends bystander training as part of campus sexual assault prevention efforts. The current study sought to understand salient themes among students’ qualitative responses for why they did not intervene in sexual assault risk situations. In 2014, undergraduate students (N = 9,358) at a large public university completed a web-based survey to assess bystander opportunities and responses for six risk situations. Content coding analysis indicated that students report several unique barriers to intervention. These findings have important implications for bystander training programs, as well as future research on bystander behavior.

Inhalt: Wo Menschen zu Arbeit und Studium zusammenkommen, spielt Sexualität in unterschiedlicher Intensität und Sichtbarkeit eine Rolle. Hochschulen unterscheiden sich von anderen Arbeitsstätten nochmal dadurch, dass sie besonders viele, junge Menschen in ihren Lehrveranstaltungen in relativ engem körperlichen Kontakt zusammenführen. Der Umgang miteinander kann problematische Formen annehmen, wobei über die Grenzen, wann ein Verhalten problematisch wurde, lange Zeit angeblich oder tatsächlich Unklarheit bestand. Es hat Jahre gedauert, bis Handlungen auch rechtlich näher fixiert wurden, wobei der Begriff „unerwünschte Handlungen“ in diesen Texten eines der Felder der Deutungen und Missdeutungen als Dilemma aufzeigt. Michael Herschelmann hat mit seinem Artikel Sexualisierte Gewalt an der Hochschule aus Sicht eines männlichen Hochschullehrenden – Handlungsmöglichkeiten zum Schutz (der Betroffenen) die Problematik aufgerollt, Fallzahlen zusammen getragen und Schutzmöglichkeiten und -verpflichtungen dargestellt.

Attitudes to Sexism and Gender Equity at a Danish University

Inhalt: We designed this study to measure the degree of backlash a specific Danish university would encounter in response to gender equity interventions. To capture this resistance we used two standardized questionnaires: the Modern Sexism Scale, which measures explicit denial of gender discrimination and resentment towards gender equity demands (such as gender interventions) and
the Support for Discriminatory Practices which measures peoples explicit preferences for hiring men over women. We also asked an open question about attitudes towards the university’s current gender policies. The questionnaire was sent to 15,493 employees. With one prompt 1,805 completed the entire questionnaire. We found that university employees scored above the midpoint on modern sexism, indicating that, on average, they held sexist attitudes. We further showed that modern sexism scores varied depending on beliefs about what was being done for gender equity in the organization, such that those who thought that enough or too much was being done had significantly higher sexism scores than those who thought that not enough was being done. Over all, our findings document explicit sexist attitudes within the target university and suggest that gender equity interventions are therefore likely to be met by great resistance from some.

A Women-Only Leadership Development Program : Facilitating Access to Authority for Women in Swedish Higher Education?

Inhalt: This article explores a national women-only leadership development program in Swedish higher education, the so-called IDAS program (an acronym for Identity, Development, Advancement, Support). IDAS encouraged and supported women academics to pursue leadership/administrative careers in higher education and was a unique intervention, aiming to increase the number of women Rectors. By drawing on interviews with some of the women who participated in the IDAS program and subsequently became Rectors, the article provides a valuable case study over best practices to increase women senior leaders in higher education. Notwithstanding the success of the leadership program, the article also deals with resistance and criticism linked to equal opportunity initiatives such as this. The article analyzes the criticism voiced by the women interviewed and suggests that it can be understood in relation to different conceptions of gender and gender (in)equality.

Inhalt: Umfassend werden hier das Verhältnis von prekären Arbeitsverhältnissen und Diskriminierungs- und Ungleichheitsstrukturen in der Wissenschaft sowie Gleichstellungspolitiken in den Blick genommen. Die Autor_innen plädieren dafür, die Ökonomisierung von Bildung, die Herausbildung der unternehmerischen Hochschule sowie die damit einhergehende Ausbreitung unsicherer Arbeitsverhältnisse in der Wissenschaft mit Prozessen der Gleichstellungsgovernance sowie der Transformation von Geschlechterverhältnissen und insbesondere von Rassismus an der Hochschule zusammenzudenken. In 12 Beiträgen werden diesbezügliche Ambivalenzen thematisiert und Interventionsmöglichkeiten, um Geschlechtergerechtigkeit, eine nicht-rassistische Hochschule und sichere Beschäftigungsverhältnisse zu verwirklichen, diskutiert.

Inhalt: This article examines the rise in precarious academic employment in Ireland as an outcome of the higher education restructuring following OECD (Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development), government initiatives and post‐crisis austerity. Presenting the narratives of academic women at different career stages, we claim that a focus on care sheds new light on the debate on precarity. A more complete understanding of precarity should take account not only of the contractual security but also affective relational security in the lives of employees. The intersectionality of paid work and care work lives was a dominant theme in our interviews among academic women. In a globalized academic market, premised on the care‐free masculinized ideals of competitive performance, 24/7 work and geographical mobility, women who opt out of these norms, suffer labour‐led contractual precarity and are over‐represented in part‐time and fixed‐term positions. Women who comply with these organizational commands need to peripheralize their relational lives and experience care‐led affective precarity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
How Job Sharing Can Lead to More Women Achieving Senior Leadership Roles in Higher Education : A UK Study

Inhalt: This article explores the opportunity that job sharing offers as a way of encouraging more women into senior management roles in the higher education sector. There is a scarcity of female leadership representation in the higher education context, in particular a lack of female leadership pipeline. The article examines the underlying influences that limit the representation of women in leadership roles. To address these contextual limitations the process of job sharing is offered as a possible solution for harnessing the skills and talents of women in leadership positions in higher education and enabling the development of a leadership pipeline. To illustrate how such job sharing could occur the article provides a detailed vignette of a job share between two senior women leaders within a single UK university context and the positive impact this had on the organisation, the individuals and their leadership development. This article seeks to make a contribution by exploring how leadership job sharing can occur and sets out some recommendations for the adoption, negotiation and establishment of job share structures in the future.
