Sexual Harassment in Academic Institutions: A Conceptual Review
Autor/in:
Thakur, Meghna Basu; Paul, Priscilla
Quelle: Journal of Psychosocial Research, 12 (2017) 1, S 33–40
Inhalt: Sexual harassment (SH) is a pervasive phenomenon in higher educational institutions, with nearly 50% female students experiencing some kind of SH during their college years (Brooks & Perot, 1991; Cortina, Swan, Fitzgerald & Waldo, 1998; Fitzgerald & Shullman, 1993; Fitzgerald et al., 1988; Ivy & Hamlet, 1996). Some studies indicate an even higher percentage (Barak, Fisher & Houston, 1992; Benson & Thomson, 1982; Reilly, Lott & Gallogly, 1986). The current research paper incorporates relevant literature, which delves into the following dimensions: (a) definition and constituents of SH, (b) correlates of SH, and (c) measures to tackle the menace of SH. Findings from the Indian context have also been considered to understand the seriousness of the phenomenon. The research has crucial implications for government organizations and workplaces in order to develop a comprehensive policy on SH and implementing grievance procedures effectively, and for mental health professionals to develop appropriate psychosocial interventions for those afflicted.

Autor/in:
Wilkesmann, Uwe

Where Intercultural, International and Diversity-related Agendas Meet - A Conceptual Framework for Higher Education Institutions
Autor/in:
Aichinger, Regina; Gaisch, Martina
Quelle: (2017)
Inhalt: In view of numerous challenges brought about by the changes in demographics, the massification of higher education, globalization trends and legal requirements (e.g. Bologna declaration, national mobility strategies), higher education institutions (HEIs) are forced to review their strategies for attracting future students. One strategy that has long been considered to be the key to success was the recruit-
ment of internationally mobile students, and consequently, the change of the local medium of instruction, mostly into English. This paper seeks to identify the interfaces between internationalization endeavors, intercultural competencies and diversity-related aspects that appear all relevant for higher education institutions but are often regarded as stand-alone measures without a cohesive frame. Hence, this contribution puts forward a conceptual model that relates the key parameters at stake and discusses implications of diverse internationalization strategies. It is suggested that apart from approaches such as Internationalization of the Curriculum (IoC) and Internationalization at Home (IaH), there may be an additional strategic orientation, one that also embraces intra-societal diversity. What we would like to call Internationalisation of the Mind (IoM) may have the potential to serve as a liaison between international, intercultural, and diversity-related aspects at the tertiary level and combine structural, community and competency internationalization strategies. To integrate these interfaces in a practical framework but also to draw on societal, disciplinary, institutional and functional cultures, a metalevel analysis of an Austrian higher education institution is provided. It is discussed how the context and causal and intervening variables impact the strategic orientation of a higher education institution with regard to internationalization and what consequences the respective alignment may have on a structural, institutional and competency level.

Inhalt: Women’s participation in s cience has been a major concern among Western feminists since the 1970s. Numerous European countries have collaborat ed to publish She Figures once every three years , which collects and compares the basic education and employment statistics for women in science and technology. However, such cross-country comparison is still rare in Asia. In this research , we collected statistics on the composition of students and faculty members in higher education in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan from 2004 to 2014 . Then we compared the patterns of gender segregation between European Union (EU) and the East Asia (EA) regions, followed by the comparison among the three EA countries. 0 0 1 218 1246 NSYSU 10 2 1462 14.0 Normal 0 10 pt 0 2 false false false EN-US ZH-TW X-NONE ([{£¥‘“‵〈《「『【〔〝︵︷︹︻︽︿﹁﹃﹙﹛﹝({ !),.:;?]}¢·–—’”•‥…‧′╴、。〉》」』】〕〞︰︱︳︴︶︸︺︼︾﹀﹂﹄﹏﹐﹑﹒﹔﹕﹖﹗﹚﹜﹞!),.:;?]|}、 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:表格內文; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-font-kerning:1.0pt;} We documented that gender participation in science in the three EA countries has basically follow ed the patterns of the EU nations in terms of decreasing vertical segregation and stabilizing horizontal segregation. However the degree of segregation in EA is higher than that in EU-28, particularly in E ngineering. Among the three EA countries, moreover, it is evident that South Korea has made better progress than the other two in the past decade in terms of women’s participation in science, particularly at the Master’s D egree level. Yet the increase of women ’s participation does not necessarily eliminat e gender segregation in science as both sexes still follow the car e/ technology division trend in their disciplinary choice s , which merit s more attention.
